    Default Units Holding The Line

    Hi,

I would like to know what broken mechanic is causing the movement of units during battle and leaving their formations/positions. Testing this with Rome and Sparta, cause they should be highly disciplined factions.

Im putting units to line formation, grouping and locking. Then moving towards enemy line close enough so they can trigger the charge. All this time im not giving any orders, units are locked and in "default guard mod" as CA claims. Same scenario repeats each time - some of my the units starts to push forward, abandoning the line, others are forming clusters revealing their sides and back to enemy. This movement leads to more unnecessary casualties and Mark Strong comments "The man are....."

This behavior is totally game-breaking for me and it leads to auto-resolve. If i cant control my units during the battle, what is a purpose of battles? What is a point of having formations at all?

Images bellow are presenting battle gameplay after patch 4. Does anybody have any info on this issue and eventual solution?

    Thanks.

Even w/ radious installed this happens to me
It's kind of funny how some aspects of the games keeps getting worse after every patch

that would be the weight the units have or so I think, but its really I think you should ask for your money back

As i remember some modding classes from RTW1, higher unit weight meant that they will hold their ground/position better compared to lighter units.

Dont think that much, you can hurt yourself.

I`ll be hopefully re-installing tomorrow to see if Patch V goes anywhere near making formations actually `hold` in battle..

one must think before speaking, what rome 1 has anything to do with 2

and in rome 1 a higher unit weight would push through a smaller unit weight creating a similar picture that you see here, put it on guard mode and it would not do that, this is specially easy to see in mods, specially hoplite phalanx

    Unfortunately - nothing.

Question was - "Does anybody have any info on this issue and eventual solution?"

They mentioned somewhere (cant find link) that they removed guard mode button cause its a default now for all units. To be more specific - without touching any commands, all the battles are looking exactly like this:

It seems to be an incredibly annoying feature called "auto rotation" or something like that, which was recently introduced. The whole unit tries to turn in formation to face the enemy. This would look really awkward on its own, but combine that with the already existing unit blobbing and you get this.

I dont think its just because they removed the guard mode button, but that they used an engine where every meele attacke turns into a choreographed movie like fight scene between 2 men.

In rome and medieval 2 only killmoves were detailed animated (which was enough for my taste) and the rest was hacking and slashing which worked best imho.

Is the behaviour the same for every unit? I've not had a chance to play post patch 2...

So far i tested Rome and Sparta - yes. All enemies i encountered are acting same. Custom battles and campaign. Since open battles are rare during campaign, its hard to notice this behavior during sieges.

Ah... fair enough. Thought that may have something to do with projectiles (i.e. units turning to face enemy unit to launch projectiles) but if it is happening to pure melee units then I just don't know. Sounds borked, though.

It looks like they wanted to fix the blobbing issue but created new one. I tested it with melee units only - results are same. If enemy have (and it always does) ranged units inside army, it creates further chaos. Your units are "auto rotating" and turning their backs or sides to them which causes huge loses. Since you can do anything to prevent that - auto resolve is only available option (and it gives less casualties.)

I had a smal mod ,where i double the unite sises and add some stuff. I made a video of my mod before and after the patch4 you may notice the differences. There are huge, patch 4 spoil the only thing that modders can fix,the battles.

    Patch3 Also patch2 or 3 again patch3

Patch4 CA is the most frustrating company, does nothing well done, they are a disgrace.
