    Default Bodyguards for faction leaders

Is it possible to change the bodyguard each time a named character becomes faction leader?

No. All generals of a faction have the same bodyguard unless they're put in by script.

can it be done via script, like the faction leader and heir change battle models?

You should ask in the Mod Workshop.

The unit limit is 500, and in SS 6.4 as released, that unit limit has been reached. You're going to have to remove units from a number of files - export_descr_unit and export_descr_buildings, and possibly descr_strat, campaign_script and descr_mercenaries if mentioned in those three files. The first two definitely need editing since export_descr_unit contains the main entries of each unit and export_descr_buildings covers the conditions of recruitment in the main campaign game (if it doesn't exist in export_descr_unit, any mention in export_descr_buildings will cause crashes). Descr_strat really only needs editing if the particular unit is present in any army at the start of the game. Campaign_script may include the units you remove in spawned armies (and in the case of Byg's Grim Reality V, units are used extensively in that script). Descr_mercenaries will only need to be edited if the units you remove are available in any of the mercenary pools.

The Mod Workshop should have plenty on editing these files.

You could use an existing unit, but then that unit will be very powerful, as it will be two or three times as large as the average bodyguard unit. Of course, that's assuming what you want to do is even possible.

Oh, just remembered - you may also need to edit descr_rebels, as that can include any units you remove.
