Battle of Marathon MACHINIMA - Athens vs Persia (Rome 2 Total War)

Hey guys so Ive been wanting to make a marathon machinima for a while and I got some time to do it last night.
As soon as I heard this song I knew Marathon was perfect for it. I tried to make it as historically accurate in the time that its shown.
Shoutout to Prussian Prince who helped me reenact the battle a couple of days ago thank you again!

Not much is shown tbh, the video doesn't even show the battle itself, maybe for a few seconds and a closeup...

Should have put more thought into this.

great vid nicely made

But why do people make something epic out what is basicly a pretty one sided battle that was decided before the engament actually started

persian army was caught on a beach completely suprised with the sea at one flank and cliffsides on the other flank the advantage and mobility of their mostly cavlry oriented army was neutralised and stood little or no chance against the Athenian hoplite line
of course leave it to the greek to blow this non event completely out of proportion

Same goes for the battle of thermoplay?? you know spartanb king leonidas and his sârtans a utterly waste of lives that served no purtpose at all
it would take the persians still more than a month to reach athens those extra few days meant nothing at all
but again leave it to the greeks to blow this up out of proportions

but great vid i can only admire the skill , dedication and hard work for making those things

With the power of hinsight, we all know that a heavily armed Greek hoplite phalanx would get the better of any Persian army, given that their flanks are secured. Back then, no one knew that for sure, and a two-to-one numerical advantage seemed to be safe enough. Same as the case of Japanese against US in WW II. Today we all know that the Japs industry would never be able to match the US giant, but people believed otherwise back then.

In addition, Marathon was anything but an one-sided battle. The Persian almost succeeded penetrating the 4-man depth Greek phalanx, which would mean an end of the battle.

Back to the video, it would be rude to critise after such amount of time and work you have invested in it, but I would humbly like to point out some minor inaccuracies:
- The battle was fought alongside the beach, not facing the beach.
- Athenian center was 4-man deep, not 2.
- Athenian flanks were standard 8-man deep
- The Persian should outnumber 2-to-1

You really couldn't be wronger with your opinion about the battle of Marathon. It seems that your not fully informed about the known historical facts. Indeed this Athenian victory was a risky and desperate close call and its outcome was even decisive for the future of our own democratic Western cultures today.

If I wanted to take anything from Rome it would be the interface. The interface from Rome 2 disconnects me from the era. I love the rome 1 interface way better. The same thing happened in Civ 5.

I'm glad you liked the video. But when I try to make machinima's I like using music that normally isnt being used in total war videos. The song is session from linkin park, and trust me. Its an acquired taste.

Let me tell you I tried to stretch the battle over and over again but to be honest it goes so quick. So I decided to use the begining of the video to showcase the leading up to the battle. I agree, I wish the battle had been longer so I could of used more of it in the video.

Didnt like how the two forces only fought as two lines. In the real battle IIRC, the Athenians acrually surrounded the Persians, reverse cannae style. This shouldve been represented.

Wow, harsh critics!

Accuracy to oneside - as I can see why people would that to be accurate - overall I liked it. I loved the beginning, loved the ships coming in and the guys coming out of the city. I did not like the tactical view being inserted and would have preferred more cinematic camera as the forces closed against each other. I also would have liked to have seen a longer - much longer - battle, but I read your post on that.

I actually did the two lines for the persians only because i wanted to represent how far the athenian line stretched and how thin it was. I was able to half surround the persians after the beefy ranked hoplites on the flanks beat back the weaker force.
The problem is in game once i started to surround the persian. There was an instant MASS route. And the battle ended abruptly. Everything went so well up to that point that I didnt do it again just in case it didnt happen again.
Reverse Cannae? You mean half crescent? Thats what I tried to represent.
