Default The Great Hall of the Red Keep

The Great Hall of the Red Keep

The Great Hall is the throne room of the king. The Iron Throne sits on a raised iron dais with high and narrow steps.
A long carpet stretches from the throne to the Hall's great oak-and-bronze doors. The Hall itself is cavernous, and can sit 1,000 people.
It is oriented north to south, with high, narrow windows on the eastern and western walls. Skulls of the Targaryen dragons adorn the walls.

Brynden Rivers comes in clutching a letter in his hand. He bows shortly before saying
"My king have you seen the letter Daemon put out. I knew this was not good. He calls the Lords to commit Treason he hopes to put himself on the throne. It is now time the move before he can gather to much support. Call the lords that you trust. Get the council together summon the army. We can not let Daemon get ahead of us. We mustn't wait."

Daeron had seen it of course, in the dark before dawn.
The king felt more tired than anything, too old for this terrible pettiness.
    He wished his brother was older, like he was, in the hopes that he would be a much wiser man;
Wondered if Daemon knew that ruling over Westeros was a duty, not a right.

"We have already. But not all the lords are present, and time is of the essence.
We will call a war council of all the lords and nobles able to attend, and will hope to put down these motions of war in a meeting at the God's Eye."

The young Tully is told to come to meeting as well, without any mention of Rhaegel or funerals.

Maegar and Alysanne, who had came with Princess Aelinor to King's Landing, were in the public present in the Great Hall. Maegar steps forward, bows and waits to a King's signal to talk. The Fair Griffin was calm while speaking to the Westeros' King:

"My King, our father, Lord Tytos Connington, wants your Grace to know that whatever side the Storm Lords choose in this war, we, the Conningtons, will be at your Grace's side, staunchly, until the very end of our House. We will be forever loyal to you, my King. Our dedication to your cause, and devotion to the true Dragon, is fully, you have the Griffin's swords. If your Grace desires so I will act as my father's representative in the War Council"

Alysanne watched the scene with delight, within the ranks of the few Ladies present in the Hall. Both Connington wore black silk ribbons, still mourning the death of the Prince, and as a sign of respect to the King.

Ah... If just Olyvar and I were married already... But I should, soon... Does the King knows about the Martell's intentions?

    Thinks Alysanne.

    King Daeron II.

Twenty thousand northerners are coming south to fight Daemon Blackfyre. They are led by Lord Stark and me. We should arrive within a few months.

Daryn Tully and his sister Cersei arrived days later after their brother's return to Riverrun. In the meantime they have heard several rumors about the upcoming war and knew by several nobles on court about their brother's decision.
To make sure that the talkings are true, they decided to visit the Throne room as there was no other option to find out if they were guests now or not.

Princess Aelinor entered the Great Hall. As the only Targaryen left in King's Landing, it was her duty to be here and represent her House. No news had come in yet from the war, so her nervousness had gotten the better of her dreams. She looked tired and worn out under her makeup, not as graceful as she used to.

While seeing her entering, Daryn wasn't sure what to say. Surely she wouldn't be all too pleased to see him, though he wasn't his brother.
But unfortunately I am his brother...
Together with his sister Cersei he bowed in front of her.
"My princess", the young poet said carefully before looking up, "We were informed about the upcoming war and what happened before the funeral. Our condolences for your loss, though I don't know how you must feel, I think it must be terrible. I... I'm sorry, I actually don't know what I'm talking..."
Unlike at the feast, Daryn lost for a slight moment at the last sentence really his self-confidence. In some way he felt from moment to the other silly as he realized that none of his words would make her life better or bring her brother back.

Aelinor's feelings were entangled in a chaotic battle from the moment she saw Daryn. She was happy that he had come to King's Landning, yet at the same time she wanted to gouge his eyes out for what his brother had done to Rhaegel. So much had happened and she had felt so alone, as if forced to carry this burden by herself until the Stranger put her in her final slumber. Rhaegel's death, Daemon's treachery, the war... she just wanted to run away from everything and forget her royal blood. At the same time, that blood was what was still keeping her here. Pride was also an occurring trait among dragons.

She straightened herself in front of the Tullys and put on her normal, indifferent face. It was her duty to represent the Targaryens in King's Landing, even if her mother and Bloodraven were still here. They weren't real dragons. She was.

"Please spare me of your excuses, Ser Tully. My brother entered the tourney of his own will and faced his death with bravery. Nothing can change that. Besides, there are much greater concerns than my sorrow of my beloved brother's premature demise. We must all move on, sooner or later."

She turned to Daryn's sister. She was surprised by her small stature, although her experience with court jesters and her recent apathy took away most of her reaction. The small lady looked like Daryn, so it was obvious they were siblings. She turned back to Daryn.

"Now, what else are you doing here?"

Cersei turned to Daryn, but remained quiet.
"Actually we came for the funeral, but are now stuck in the capital due to the war", Daryn explained then, now more confident, "And it looks like my brother has arranged our stay in the capital during the war with King Daeron as far as we have heard. So it looks like we're guests."
"I hope Mylady doesn't mind the visit", Cersei responded after a short nodding, "The Riverlands won't be safe to travel at the moment and I doubt that the world for us would look happier at Riverrun, which has to fear everyday the assault of the Reach. At least we would be honoured, if we're able to stay here for the next weeks. Otherwise we have to find a better solution."

    Daryn smiled friendly.
"Probably at the servant's quarters, if there are no guest rooms in the keep or if we're not send to an inn", he responded polite, "I would even take a normal chamber."
"And maybe hide yourself there as a maid I guess", his sister chuckled before nearly whispering to Lady Aelinor, "You definitly have luck to meet him here. To meet you again in private, he actually even planned to disguise himself as my maiden, while we're visiting you at your chamber. He's really a mad and crazy guy, but definitly a nice and honest one. My father may hate him for this, but I like him for being not a normal brother."
She then went on in a serious tone.
"But yes, we don't need any big chambers, Lady Aelinor", she continiued before smiling, "Especially for me a small chamber should be good enough, if there's any space for us at the keep."

She felt her cheeks becoming red when Cersei whispered to her. To go to such lengths just to meet her in private... she was quite flattered, she had to admit to herself. But she quickly shook it off, Daryn's brother had killed Rhaegel, the young Tully's charms would not work on her. Aelinor's wall towards Daryn was slowly crumbling, though.

"We couldn't have you get a room at an inn, not when you are our guests. I will make sure that you get rooms here. I'm sure that we can find something for you both."

She snapped her fingers and soon a servant came running. Aelinor instructed him to about his task to find quarters for the two sibling. He bowed and ran off on his quest. The princess turned back to Daryn and Cersei.

"Now, please walk with me, I believe we have much to discuss. So, how do you feel? War is once again upon us and it seems our fathers and brothers are joining the battlefield. I fear the worst for my family. How many will return, I wonder every day. You must worry as well, if your home isn't safe at the moment."

To Brynden Rivers, castellan of the Red Keep,

I regretfully inform you that is impossible to send aid at this time. King's Landing is far too much south and I command little and less banners to make a difference. By the time we got there, the battle would have been already decided. You stand alone, but you have my and my house's best wishes and prayers, to the Old Gods and the New. Should you prevail, we will most likely be able to send reinforcements. Should you fall, we offer you and others refugees our hospitality and protection.

Done in the light of the Seven,

Helman of House Manderly, Lord of White Harbour and Warden of the White Knife

Daryn nodded, definitly feeling not pleased about the current situation.
"Indeed, my father, my uncle and my older brother will fight against the rebells", he said not very happy, "I think we're all kind of worried now and it's kind of weird. Every day feels like the waiting for a death message. Father is a great warrior, but his health is growing worse from year to year. And if Edric dies by an unfortunate hit, a well-placed arrow, an unlucky step of Lurker - well, I think Cersei then has to overtake the lordship -"
"Not again!", his sister suddenly interrupted him nearly shouting with an unhappy look, "I told you at Winterfell that you should stop with this talking! You're the second heir and I don't want to hear any more words of death. It's already tragic enough that other people will die in this cruel war, so don't think about things like this."
    He only shook his head.
"I know you dislike it and I do it also, but as said, in worst case I'm not a ruler", her brother told her honest, "I wish Jamie would be here as it would make a lot of things easier, but unfortunately he is at the Wall. Cersei, just be realistic! Riverrun is my home, but not my kingdom! I can't give our people the strength they will need after the war!"
"Do you think I do?", she sighed, but then became quiet, "As said, I dislike the topic. There is too much death in it."
Instead of answering with a sentence, Daryn just nodded and hold her hand as he saw her a little bit crying, spreading one single tear. The times were definitly getting darker for all of them.

She listened as the siblings started to argue between each other. Perhaps it had not been such a good idea to bring it up, even though it was something they all thought about. Not only these three, the whole realm probably carried the same heavy thoughts. War was always a terrible thing, especially one that ripped families apart. Aelinor sighed silently.

"Daryn, remember our dance? Strength has many faces, my lineage is proof of that. From Aegon the Conqueror, to Jaeharys the Wise and Baelor the Beloved, no king has been the same, but the have all had their own strength. What makes you so sure that the strength you carry is lacking to make you a good leader? Only your own doubt holds you down. There are people who believe that you are better than you think you are. Don't think you're alone."

Aelinor's eyes narrowed when she noticed Bloodraven in the hall. He was looking their way and he was very hard to miss in a crowd, his pale skin and white hair making him glow like a light in the dark. She had heard that was in charge of the city's defenses, but he was no Targaryen, just another bastard. Like Daemon...
