Change general unit selection options?

I would love to be able to select first cohort, or a legendary eagle unit as my bodyguards unit. Is there a known way to do this?

Yes, you can do this but;

For custom battle, you must edit this table:

unit_custom_battle_permissions

Copy desired unit's row, paste it and tick "generalunit" column box.

For campaign map:

commander_unit_permissions

Again, copy your desired unit's row, paste it and edit "factionkey" column to give permission to a specific faction for making that unit available for generals (rom_arverni, rom_aedui, rom_iceni etc.); but if you want to give that unit to a faction group as a general, then you must edit "subculturekey" column (sc_rom_gaul, sc_rom_dacia etc.).
