Default Anisotropic Filtering is not working and has never worked

http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...ed-(proof-pics)? I've used every single beta, full patch, and have tested this vigorously since the game came out. As of now and upon launch, Anisotropic Filtering does not function in any form, whether done via in-game menu or being forced via NVidia control applet.

At first I was hopeful that by some miracle, my two NVidia 680 cards were actually doing SLI as when I upped the graphic settings from trilinear filtering to Anisotropic 2x there was no performance hit. I should have know it was too good to be true. Today as I did some extensive bench testing with beta 4.0 I dug further, tested the 16x setting and once again, zero performance hit. So I did some analysis of pics and found that sadly, there is no Anisotropic Filtering going on no matter what setting is used. A 16x setting should correct texture blur out to 75% screen depth, but that is obviously not occurring. I tried forcing the setting with the NVidia control panel, and it is not making any change whatsoever.

CA - I sure hope you didn't disable this on purpose because you knew the performance hit would make people even angrier... I know the extra 4x sampling would be a tremendous performance hit, but it's really our decision to do this to ourselves, isn't it?

This is utterly pitiful. No AA no Anisotropic Filtering no HDR or Tesselation. Im guessing they knew full well of the games performance issues well before release and disabled these to prevent further performance hits. Sickening it is.

well we know the game didn't come together well regarding optimization, so they made cut backs. This games has lots of cutbacks, but I find the idea interesting that they cut graphics(which should as you say, be our choice) to make the games running appear better, rather sneaky. Or do you think it has anything to do with glitches that may appear, if we could turn them on?

there is still no word about this urgent questions on totalwar.com. And a support technican already said they cannot pass information why they dropped it. If I would not knew better I would say the next TW is heading to consoles:

    - downgraded console level graphics
    - cpu based forced design even for graphical features
    - streamlined functionalities to the max
    - click to upgrade everwhere instead of complexity

watch out for the new Steam "consoles" on PC basis and a controller...

If you don't take me serious, but I bet 10$ we will talk again about this in 2014.

I'm not sure if it is true but there is a rumor that Rome 2 will be heading for consoles now anyway, I do kind of beleive it because when I play it feels like I am playing a ported pc game.

I don't hate the fact that it might go to consoles, but their decision in that matter should not influence the PC fan-base and alienate them just because there is "perhaps" more cash to be made. We have PC's we have a mouse we Don't need a console friendly interface! I say perhaps because the die hard console crowd don't strike me as a total war bunch.

Anyway in regard to the topic about AF, I was also bemused at the fact that on my relatively low end rig I could put AF on 16x with no difference in FPS, I guess it would really make a difference anyway because raising/lowering settings makes no difference to my framerates to whichever extend between low/med/high/Vhigh.

Steam has nothing to do with this and I swear the next person who start pushing a personal console agenda by using steam as an example is getting a punch to the throat.

The steam console is a streaming service. You can pick up your main PC, plug it into your TV and play your entire steam library that way. Or if - like me - your main PC is used also as a work station and is in a completely different room, then you can get a cheapo box, put on the new Steam steaming service and have that plugge dinto your TV instead. It will stream form your main box to the TV and your entire stream PC library will be playable that way.

Want to use a wireless KB/mouse? go for it.
Is steam also developing a controller? Hell yes, and for some games this would make sense and allow you to have a console experience with your steam games.

Steam will be providing one of these streaming boxes, but any manufacturer can produce them (their words) and will have varied performance levels and cost points.

THIS IS NOT A ING CONSOLE.

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with whether CA/Sega will go the Console route. I personally think that they will (esp. with Warhammer being in the future).

I said it will be ported to console. JACK LUSTED said! that CA haven't intention to make TW game for console. Ok, we will see that...

It doesnt matter wether it does or does not, the problem we have right now is a PC game that does not even have Anisotropy and not alot of anything else tbh. You are not forced to buy a console for rome 2 you have it right there in front of you.

The problem is the game we have now on PC.

I'm a single player campaign guy and really don't care for multiplayer. If they want to make more money by reaching more people thru consoles, hope they'll use that Total War Arena stuff(this, they can fill with DLC and microtransactions all they want). Been with Total War series since Shogun 1, been stalking these forums since Empire Total War . Graphics are a huge part of immersion on my games, and going back to Rome 1 graphics after Shogun 2 and Empire is not on my day one(or ever) purchase list. This game graphics look horrible on my pc. Specs:i7 Haswell, MSI 7970 3gbs, 512ssd, 8gb ram.

Either one of 2 scenarios present themselves...... 1. They knew the game had serious performance issues well before release and gutted AF as well as AA, HDR and Tesselation to prevent the game from running even worse or....2. The TW series is indeed headed towards the consoles sometime in 2014-15 maybe even later. At this point I am guessing its a little from column 1 and a little from column 2. None the less we the fans were taken to the proverbial cleaners for a title that in all reality isn't worth half of what we were charged.

Is this an anisotropic filtering failure or another case of poor texture streaming?
