Default Post Patch 3 campaign battle "fishiness"

Since patch 3, I've noticed something annoying. Small factions will recruit a 20 unit army and park it in their city. Combined with the local garrison, this gives them a 30-35 unit force against my army. However, against larger factions, its much easier as either its just the garrison or a field army. Rarely is it a double stack

    anyone else notice this?

It might be because of the "King's Purse" - a fixed amount of money each faction gets every turn. This causes small factions to be proportionally stronger, because they can use all that money to fortify their 1-2 settlements. Purpose is gameplay balance, to make smaller factions last longer instead of everything lumping together in a couple of huge empires very quickly.

Not sure if the King's Purse is in Rome 2, but it sounds like it from what you describe.
The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.

That makes sense, SirRobin. With the all factions mod, any single city faction will immediately be producing more than enough money per turn to field a 20 unit army, even with nothing but a level 1 city and level 1 farm.

If you feel your stack is overwhelmed there: just bring another stack of yours

The AI defending a settlement is so passive though that it is rarely a problem. Just bring slingers and machine-gun the defenders down...

Small independent states would have disproportionately sized defensive armed forces historically.
