try to aim for their best sword infantry asap. they also have an elite spear unit. both hold battlelines very well.
if you want to know the units of a faction, just pick it in custom battles, you will see all the units you can recruit for that faction. right clicking any units will bring up the encyclopedia entry with tech and building requirements.

Wodanaz Spears are really good and easy to get. Remember that you need a horse farm to train cavalry.
Also, just stay away from club levy and bloodsworn.
Suebi are fun and have a pretty impressive set up
currently early campaign i m mostly using those woodan spears 9 of them , longbow archers 4 of them, a few beserkers (4) and 2 light horses
those spears are great with archer support shielding those beserkers till armies are close enough to release those beserkers and they really winning battles for me ive seen them rout units ager units
i started expanding west first till the rhine made some agrements with the factions west and then started expanding east it is a long struggle and except for two regions that is almost done after that probably go for the alpes and gaul but that will be a more challeging campaign
only problem i have with suebi is their economy it is a struggle to get a decent income
