Icon1 Greek States Anonymous Roster Expansion (GSARE : AARE / SARE / EARE) SARE v101 released

Greek States Anonymous Roster Expansion (GSARE)
    (AARE SARE EARE )
    Description
This is a simple and straight forward modification with the goal of expanding the rosters of the Greek states, to bring them up to par with the other major factions. Unit designs and additions being based off of a somewhat historical context as well direct inspiration from EB1.
Each factions roster will be divided into its own pack, so you can pick and choose which one you would like to use. The mod is also being designed with an emphasis on having as little conflict as possible with other mods.
Known conflicts are, and should be limited to, vanilla unit appearance changes and faction color changes. I will not make any attempt to change the balancing of vanilla units as this would open a host of conflict problems, given the way modding R2 currently works.
This however should not be necessary, as all units are designed around vanilla stats. The stat balancing attempts to keep the additions relevant and useful, but not overpowered, with their own pros and cons.
Several of these units, or unit ideas, are shared amongst the greek states as they are drawn from a similar military ethos, with each city state/kingdom having its own particular flare and specialty as already designed in the base game.
This is based off of the idea that while a particular city or kingdom becomes dominate in Greece, it does so through a unification with the other Greeks, and not simply, for example, Sparta conquering Athens and therefore Athens becomes a form of mini-sparta that only produces Spartans. Each faction has its own particular core, and style, but there are shared elements in military organization.

AARE's original focus remains, with a few new additions. Like the other Greek states, Athens has now been given access to a few vanilla units.
Specifically, Cretan Archers, Rhodian Slingers, and Thassalian cavalry. The first two are found in the level 4 aux barracks, and the last one is in the heavy line.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Thalássio Hoplitai
Heavy Professional Hoplite Marines(Spear/Sword & Shield)
Recruited from the Drydock and Military Port, they are transported on an assault hexeres and serve as an professional boarding and coastal assault force.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Epilektoi Hoplitai
Elite Heavy Hoplites (Spear & Shield)
    Hoplite Phalanx, Rapid Advance.
Recruited from the level 4 heavy barracks.
They are the oldest and best hoplites in the polis, wearing the best armor available with the best training, equipped in the classic greek style.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Boeotian Light Hoplites
Professional Light Hoplites (Spear & Shield)
    Hoplite Phalanx, Rapid Advance
Recruited from the level 3 and up heavy barracks.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Epilektoi Phalangitai
End Tier Light Pike Unit (Pike & Aspis)
    Form Pike Phalanx, Steady
Recruited from the level 4 heavy barracks.
These elite represent the adoption of a strategy focused on speed and mobility, unlike their Macedonian and Ptolemaic counterparts. These men wear light linothorax and no greaves. They would wither if outflanked and shot/hit from the unprotected side and back, but these men do not intend on being outflanked. They can advance and manuever with great speed, providing their commander a lightning fast and skilled pike unit.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Thracian Peltast Auxilia
Professional Medium Peltasts(Sword/Javelin & Thureos Shield)
    Quick Reload
Recruited from the level 3 and up Auxiliary barracks.
The Athenian military was known to contain more than just greeks, they made ample use of the ferocity of northern barbarians. These men are such a unit, surpassing greek peltasts in both skill and weight, they are well armed and armored to provide deadly fire that can be followed up with a charge. They should not be wasted trying to fight the main battle line however, after peppering the enemy with their javelins they would do well to retreat to the flanks where they can support their allies.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Scythian Heavy Archers
Heavily Armored Professional Archer Unit (Composite Bow & Sword/Shield)
    Precision Shot
Recruited from the level 3 and up Auxiliary barracks.
Athens employed more than just Thracians, Scythians served well as a policing force in the polis, as well as providing an excellent source of archers for the army. These men are a mixed band of older veterans and young recruits, veterans making use of heavier scale armor while the new blood is equipped in greek linothorax. They should be kept well away from cavalry, but can be expected to defend themselves well enough if engaged by infantry. This would be to waste them, however, and serve better when supported by infantry that will allow them to use their composite bows to deadly effect.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Scythian Cavalry Auxilia
Heavy Melee Cavalry (Spear & Shield)
Recruited from the level 4 heavy barracks.
A Scythian is worth far more in his saddle, and these men demand a heavy price for their services. What the strategos gets in return is worth the gold, a melee cavalry unit of greater skill than any greek dare admit.
They are protected by the finest armor their people could provide, and are ready to ride to the defense of the polis.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Epilektoi Thalássio Thorakitai
Very Heavy Elite Thorax Marines (Sword & Shield)
    Recruited from the military port.
These are the admirals guard, the marines of the flagships of Athens, and a source of pride for the city. They are armored in the finest bronze thorax that can be fashioned, and fight with a kopis sword and aspis shield. They sail on board a hepteres flagship, which can seat the admiral of the fleet or serve as the strongest assault ship Athens can put to sea. Their numbers are however limited, and the fine ships and armor come at great cost.

    Sparta Anonymous Roster Expansion (SARE)

SARE focuses on a few things, expanding the roster of Sparta with new units, giving access to vanilla greek units that are within reason, and reskinning the Spartan roster to fit a new style.
The new additions stick to the vanilla tiering of Spartan units, namely Spartan/Periokoi/Helot levels. They also follow the same unit cap limitations for Spartan units.
Sparta shares the granted access to Cretan Archers and Rhodian Slingers as well.
Finally the reskin effort was made to unify the style of the entire army in line with the additions, with an over arching idea in mind.
Sparta is a conservative and segregated city state, the Spartan citizens, Spartiates, are held above the Periokoi non citizen and Helot slave classes.
This applies to the styling of Spartan units in choice of equipment and the appearance of the men, the greatest change to be seen is in the Helot and Periokoi variants.
They now have the regular greek skin, the spartan skin is now restricted to, well, the Spartans.
The appearance of these Spartan "faces" in other armies due to AARE, or Os Greek for example, can be seen as a representation that these man, after being conquered, were added to the rolls.
I wanted Sparta to benefit from this additional variety too, so that every unit you see isn't just the same faces, but in a way that made sense to me for Sparta.
    ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP
    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=191884398

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Royal Spartan Pikemen
    Very Heavy Elite Pike Phalanx
    Steady
Recruited from the level 4 heavy barracks
The finest of Sparta are willing to take up the sarissa, as well as the hoplon, and provide Sparta with an elite pike unit on par with the best of the other Greeks, although their numbers are limited.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Spartan Thorax Spearmen (Thorakitai)
Heavy Spear Unit (Spear/Javelin & Shield)
    Square Formation, Shield Wall
Recruited from the level 3 and up heavy barracks
Although more conservatively dressed, Sparta still benefits from the advances in greek warfare. A step up from Thureos spears, Thorax Spearmen enjoy the weight and protection of greater armor in addition to better training. Seen as imitations of Romans, these men fight in a similar style, throwing javelins before they charge in with their spears.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Spartan Thorax Swordsmen (Sword/Javelin & Shield)
    Heavy Melee Infantry
    Use the Whip, Shield Wall
Recruited from the level 3 and up heavy barracks
Another change in greek warfare that Sparta has had to grudgingly adapt to, but they are by no means inferior because of this. Armored in uniform chain mail, a more conservative selection of helmets, celtic swords and thuros shields. And while they may not be in the Phalanx, these men are still Spartans, and believe in their own invincibility just as much as they ever did.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Periokoi Swordsmen (Sword/Javelin & Shield)
    Medium Fast Melee Infantry
    Use the Whip, Shield Wall
Recruited from the level 2 and up heavy barracks
Spartans, who are sure everyone would agree about their superiority, are sadly limited in number. As such the non citizens must fill in the gaps, and do so in the ways that Sparta requires. These men are more quick on their feet than their heavier counterparts, due in part to their lighter and sometimes lacking equipment. Hurling javelins before the charge with sword and shield, they can be expected to acquit themselves well, but they are no equals to the heavier soldiers of other states.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Helot Spearmen (Spear/Javelin & Shield)
    Light Fast Spear Infantry
    Use the Whip, Shield Wall
Recruited from the level 1 barracks and up the heavy line
Helots were often offered the chance for freedom and glory when Sparta's need was dire. The results were usually what you might expect however, these men are slaves, and as such paying for their upkeep is quite low, as is their desire to fight. But slaves have their uses, and these men can certainly serve to chase down skirmishers or be brave enough to charge into an enemies flank or rear. They're also good at dieing, a far more acceptable casualty than losing a Spartan.

    Epirus Anonymous Roster Expansion (EARE)

EARE is much smaller and simpler in scope than the other unit packs, but, like the others, attempts to expand the Epirote roster with units already in the game as well as some new additions.
Epirus, being a successor state more than a greek state, already shared many of same units found in the rosters of their peers.
However quite a few units were missing, this pack addresses the holes in roster by giving Epirus access to Royal Peltasts, Thorax Swordsmen, Thessalian Cavalry and Shield Bearers.
In addition to these permissions, 4 new units have been created, inspired primarly by EB.
These are the Agrianian Assault Infantry, Illyrian Club Levies, Hypaspistai Swordsmen, Thorax Spears.
The pack also includes one minor alteration to a vanilla unit skin, the Thureos spears, in the attempt to make them more closely resemble their counterpart in EB.

I hope you enjoy these roster packs, and please post any problems you encounter with balance or otherwise, as well as any suggestions you might have about the appearance of the units or any new units that might be added. I am interested in keeping the additions as authentic as possible.

    Credits
Due credit goes to IGdood for his granted use of his sword/spear & shield animation fragment.
To Catamite of Syracuse for his generous gift of AARE unit cards. (They are excellent, here's hoping he makes more for the other packs. Purely at his discretion however)
To daniu for the PFM, without it none of this would have been possible.
To Os and Gavitron, I use your packs often as a source of reference and inspiration for my own unit designs.
To Hellas Resurgent, another long standing source of inspiration for me.
To Ahiga, for use of his leather muscle cuirasses, as well as scale linothoraxes (which I may work into GSARE at some point)
And to CA for making R2 of course.

Recommended Mods that go well with GSARE
The faction colors represented in these screenshots are from the Natural Dyes mod, which I highly recommend you download.
Os Greek which does an excellent job of reskinning greek units. There are a few conflicts so adjust your load order according to who you favor
Hellas Resurgent is another excellent reskin, though with my recent changes conflict has arisen. Use either his or mine depending on your taste.

    Compatibility Issues
These mods make changes to, depending on the pack, vanilla unit variants, the unit variant table, and (eventually) faction colors. You will run into issues with mods that also change these things, and depending on the circumstance you can choose what mod you want favored/loaded by placing it later in your load order.

Hey looking very good, I always missed that Athens didn't had any kind of pike men.
if you take suggestions why not add some of the old units from rome 1 like, armoured hoplites and the sacred band. And the the Theban hoplites which used Boeotian helmets.

    Looks great Smarmy!

I always felt that Athens and Epirus lacked some of the love CA put into Macedon and Sparta. Both of those have their own factional flavor, but Athens has...one unique cavalry unit?

Would love to see some more marine-type units and unique ships (if possible). Athens was a premiere naval power right?

Anyway, +rep and keep up the good work!

Very nice! Usually I don't like unit packs because they end up just adding more units without "character" to them and can be a pain to balance with other mods, but you have done a very nice job. Will definitely try them out! Might you consider doing more unit packs inspired by EB? Would be nice to get all unit packs from one place. Obviously, some factions don't need much love but there are many who do.

    @VarrKhaitan
The Epilektoi really are the armored hoplites already, and it can kinda already be construed that the hoplites from different city states are rolled into the leagues military, when you see those men mixed with others in the hoplite unit. Any man wearing a boeotian helmet for instance you could say is from there.

    @FaLKReN Thanks! External link added.

@dom385 There are many ways to affect the battle speed, I'm trying to keep the mod as compatible with as many mods possible by not changing anything overarching. If a balance mod wants to change battle speed by rebalancing the stats of all units in the game it will conflict with a lot of mods, especially battle mods that try to address the problem from the rules, weapons and armor tables. My mod is however compatible with those latter mods, and I personally use close combat gold.

@McCarronXLD Thanks! I tried to keep them authentic as possible when putting them together, and had help in the critiquing process of their appearance from others, they know who they are. I may do more unit packs, certainly, just gotta find a faction that's lacking and doesn't already have a lot of attention from other mods, then find inspiration for units.

    Looks excellent!
Is it fully compatible with patch4 beta? Will it be, in your opinion with patch 4 (release)?
Do you have to modify things to make they compatible with up to come patches or are the modification somehow independent from the modifications done by CA?
I ask that cause if I start a campaign with them now, it would be a pity if they run incompatible with patch 5 or 6 in 2 weeks from now...

@crawe1 Thanks! I'm glad you like them.

@Δράκων Thanks! Yes, the pack is designed for patch 4. I don't modify any vanilla tables, the only way patch 5 or 6 might require updating is if those patches made changes to unit balance again, and simple stat changes like that shouldn't break a savegame.
I plan to update the mod regularly as those patches come out and address any changes.

    Thanks for your fast reply!
Awesome. I really look forward to test it tonight at home.
By the way, in your mod's tables, do you have only the rows with the new units or did you keep the entries of the other units you havent modded?
If it's only your new units, I think you're right, even a big patch cant really break the mod, that's good news. You confirm it?

EDIT: did you change something to the files today?

I want to congrat you first of all Smarmy, those units are a pretty nice adition to Athens.

Althou i have a small problem, when ever i try to start the game (when i check this mod in the manager) it freezes in the loading screen. Any idea why this is happening?

    Thanks!

@Δράκων The only entries in my tables are the news units and the other table entries they need to work. They are renamed tables, for instance you take the name of the vanilla table and add a title to the beginning of it like AARE_ and they contain no information on any other unit in the game. Even a patch that adds new entries to a table, like patch 4 that broke combat mods because of new entries, should be fine with this mod I think. I don't edit vanilla tables and my mod does not try to overwrite vanilla tables. It simply adds a new entry. I can't be 100% sure but it should be fine.
Also, all changes I make I add to the changelog and update the mod version listed. I don't stealth patch.

@Risllot Hmmmm. Is it the only mod you have? Are you running patch 3? Does the modmanager report any conflicts (if you have other mods that is)?
My best guess knowing nothing about your setup would be that if you're still running patch 3 that could cause it. I designed the new units off of patch 4 tables.
Edit* To further clarify, for both of you really, the reason patch 3 might not work and patch 5 would is because patch 5 would presumably add entries and not remove them (hopefully), since my mod uses patch 4 it may make references to entries patch 3 does not contain and therefore would not be able to load. Under patch 5 my mod would simply ignore the new entries since it does not use them. My best educated guess.

No, it's not the only mod. Althou, the other mods that i have are purely aesthetical and not destined for a greek culture.
But just to make sure, i unchecked all of them and tried to run AARE all alone - still nothing.

Still, just like you said, must be because i'm still running patch 3. Haven't tried the 4th yet, but i might do it later.

Thanks for your time Smarmy, apreciated!

Excellent work, now I can tell cause I have tested it ast night.
    Awesome look!

A small problem: I cant see texts. I think it comes from the fact that I use a localized version of the game (French). Units are perfect but no name, no description.
Do you know how to correct it?
