CTD before battle starts

I just got back into TATW and I am playing a VH/VH with Gondor. I have noticed a problem with crashing when going into a battle against Mordor. This only seems to happen when I go into a defensive siege when Mordor has catapults. This has only happened at two occasions when Mordor attacks me at W. Osgiliath. I have been forced to auto_win to avoid losing my city and loosing the campaign. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks.

Do other battles crash? Can you play any other battle?

It only crashes in siege battles where the enemy has catapults. I started a High Elves campaign to check. All field battles work fine, even with ballistas. I haven't tested out besieging an enemy when they have cats, same goes with field battles with cats. I was thinking it could be related to Osgiliath being a custom settlement, but that isn't the case. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Actually, W.Osgiliath did have a bug which caused crashes in lot of battles, but, it has been fixed, you can install TATW 3.3 UNOFFICIAL PATCH ( you would have to start a new campaign after you apply this Patch): http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...1#post10589833

I'll look into downloading that later. But I still crash with siege battles that don't involve Osgiliath. In my High Elves campaign, The Orcs seige just a vanilla HE settlement and i still CTD.

What are your system specifications ( type of processor and its strenght in GHz, type of Video card and its strenght in MB-GB, amount of RAM installed ) ?

Just saying this now, it's a really crappy computer which is 7 years old.
I also have no idea if I am giving you the correct info, but I'll try. Not very computer savvy.
Intel Core 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13Ghz
2.13 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

Oh dear.. I`m affraid not much can be done to fix your current problem, cause your specs are way too low for this game.

Your processor is too weak for it to play with all the features, unit models, scripts etc.. which are implemented into this game, a game which is MORE advanced than M2TW itself.

Your amount of RAM is too low, and it is just not enough for M2TW engine which can literally use all your RAM by itself, and your whole amount of RAM is used by other background programs at the same time while you play TATW.

Do you have any funds for upgrading your PC ? It would be wise, cause in it`s current status, your PC will give you just headaches while trying to play TATW.

I figured that would be the case.

I don't have much money at the moment as I am trying to move out but I'll see what I can do. I'd also rather just build a new pc all together. I don't know if upgrading this old computer is worth it. I'll look into it though.

Upgrading it would not be wise, better to make a whole new build. There are some good tech help people over at The Basement forum, when you are ready for new build( and get the budget for it..

) you can get good info from them.

I actually have one more question. Due to my financial situation, getting a new computer is out of the question. I'd love to continue to play the game though. Is there a way I could edit out the catapults from the game? I know they are nice to have and lore friendly, but if that is what is causing the crashing to happen, I'd love to get rid of it.

You can ask here for more help ( LINK ) maybe Withnar or Mank or some other experienced modder could give you some instructions.

But, it won`t be much of a help, can you at least get some more RAM for your PC? M2TW engine can use up to 2 GB of RAM by itself, and since you have soo little amount ( just 1.5 GB of RAM ), it can cause these kind of issues which you are having at the moment. Sorry, but that is the current status of your PC and this mod ( TATW ) which you want to play.

His computer is just fine. I don't know just how more "advanced" TA 3 is from TA 1.4, but I ran that 1.4 and other mods besides on a computer that's also 7 years old. I have a dual core processor, but apparently that doesn't matter, and each core is 2 GB, I had 1 GB RAM until I upgraded to 3 GB last year, and my video card was 128 MB until it died (not while playing M2) and I replaced it with a cheap 1 GB one to tide me over until I get a new computer.

Always upload your log, as it makes finding the problem much easier.

1.5 GB of RAM is easily eaten by the Windows services and the rest of background programs, so, how much is left for M2TW engine to use it?

Either our troubled friend should get more RAM, or, lower ALL Video Settings ( especially Textures and unit size) and pray that his next battle in some CUSTOM made settlements does not crash again.

When they do crash, post a log so that some of the modders ( maybe k/t..

) can check can they give you better explanation for the cause of your crashes.

I actually tested a ton of custom battles. The problem was the unit scale. My specs can't handle battles with 5000+ men. I switched to Large unit scale. Hopefully this will solve the issue. I've started a new campaign to see if it will work. If not, I'll just have to lower the unit scale again.
