Great shields, dont let nazis see that swastika do! What did it mean to Etruscans?

thanks , etruscans have the three at the top, its the samnites who used the swastika. Its was positive symbol for them, like fertility, fortune, luck. I don't know if its related to a particular tribe or a god.
Saying, I've only copied what Osprey designed.

Actually samnites are importants as mercenaries, like Pyrrhos did allied with them against Rome, and Hannibal too.
I will eventually make more shields if, only if these ones looks good in game. I don't know at all how works the shaders and N.map in rome II

Superb stuff Vinc.xxiii, I'll likely add them to my Arete Ton Xenon mod and credit ya when I do.

I'll see what resources I have in the future for Italic shields, though I'd admit to be a bit deficient in them.

One thing that'd be great to see would be Italic textures for the oval thureos or Roman-style scutum, since it seems the Italics used them as well. I know it is possible to add new textures via some choice editing of the rigid model's hex files, so when I figure out how to do it for shields with decals and such I'll tell you how/do it for you.

Thanks Ahiga, your help is welcome, I must admit I can't figure how to implement them in game for now. It sounds really tricky in comparison of MTW2.

Certainly some textures for oval scutum will be textured once we will find a way to by-pass the actual C.A way with these stupid stickers. Or at least to put the patterns on a decal-map format a bit higher in size. Because, 126/256 its a bit small.
It would be very sad if its not changeable.

Also, you probably noticed, these patterns_diffuse disappear when you lower your shader filter under 4.1.(or I'm the lone who have this issue?)
I don't know if you had played these "Italian" Spearmen in Rome 2, but its very disappointing in comparison of what MTW2 mods features in terms of shields.
Their shields are all pixelised, cause to sticker's CA system, here they are:

Btw I am trying to implement those into my mod if you like ... The Samnites will so be able to show all different shield pattenrs .

Edit: Ok so I cheked ur file and its not that the way to implement them , if you have the pattern psd I can create the pattern files to use and make them used ingame, or u can provide me directly with the patterns and I can create the array file to use them .

@Prometheus, its was what I fears, they can't be implemented as well, the only way to implement them as well could be:
-create 1 new samnite shield variantmesh
-assign that new shield to the "italian spearmen"
by the way you will have two varientmeshes for that unit.

Black-out totally the actual C.A stickers I shown here #7
    Do this could work?
Do a unit can use several shields?
I will try to extract the patterns, I've created them from nothing in following the Osprey book and that historical source for the "waves" patterns:

I've uploaded the .psd, you just have to reduce the size for that fit to actual stickers, but I don't guarantee it could looks good...pfff what a bad system they enabled. I will start a new campaign in Paeninsula Italica II, sur they're not rated 10/10 by corrupted game reviewers, but at least their mod its historical. Disgusted of C.A I am.

Looks nice, but 1 problem; ancient Samnites didn't use that shield.

Livy tries to make a connection between ancient Samnites and the gladiatorial Samnites of his day. Other contemporary sources from the period (ie. Dionysius of Halicarnassus) specifically says they bear a thureos. Frescos show that Samnites used hoplon, rimless circular shields, and thureos-style shields. However, these are all coastal Samnites, and Livy's description of his Samnite shield may have been applicable for the men inhabiting the inland... may have. The only evidence of a "Samnite" shield that Livy describes (ie. trapezoidal) was found at Talamon, Etruria, "probably commemorating the Roman victory over the Gauls at Talamone in 225 BC..." (Peter Connolly, 2012), so that may have well been a Celtic shield... may have.

History aside, your shield art is amazing I'm not all for the green decor on the shields though; blues, reds, yellows and whites seem to have been the Italian colour-scheme. I actually don't think I've ever seen a contemporary painting of an Italian warrior with green clothing, or decorative art

    Hi there,

I would love to take the offer to make use of your shield patterns in Authentic Ancient World. We are currently overhauling Greek factions, but as soon as we make use of your shields, I will post it in here to show you how your work is used.

    Cheers

It is a very nice result+Rep

I have integrated them into the CAC development version and we plan to field them in our next release. We will of course add the necessary credits. Below you can see the in-game result.

Great work Vinc. I'd hope that we could go ahead and use your shields for our Italians in Lines of Battle in the near future.

That reminds me there's a thesis you would likely find use of. It's a massive resource for South Italic martial archaeology: http://www.mediafire.com/view/cp8gg2...hael_Burns.pdf
