One thing is sure, though, since M2TW, CA games doesn't build any immersion on characters. They can give names to armies, if you don't even know who's the general you're fighting, or care about your own general it will get boring whatever the challenge.

Something to chew on. Just a few of many reasons why we still think Rome 1 with mods is better than Rome 2. Epic land battles, not countless city battles.

I really despise the "cater" your generel's skills since S2TW but RTW gets it right!
All these awesome traits occur by chance, ancestry, battle/governing experiences and buildings that help influence the character's development. It gave life to these 2D portraits!

My older brother agrees with this thread. He's already back to Rome I.
From a technical standpoint, I say no, but from a design, moddability and fun-factor standpoint, I agree wholeheartedly.

And remember many Rome 1 mods have 2 turns per year or 4 turns per year for those who want to hardcore roleplay their generals and families.
Some mods have the 2 tpy but sub-mods to increase them to 4 tpy.
Right now there is a Roma Surrectum 2.5 and 2.6. Both have 2 tpy. I've been playing 2.5 for now because there is a submod by Primo that allows 4 tpy to better roleplay.
RS 2.6 is still improving the gamplay even more and when it reaches its' full maturity I'm sure a 4 tpy won't be far behind . That's not to say 2.6 isn't ready to play, a vast majority of RS fans are playing it now giving feed back to help improve it.

Bring your best game on. Because if I remember right, SPQR will hand your ass to you early in the game if you're not careful.

Indeed, im a quite vet of SPQR and RS2 and a number of other med2 mods. The challenge they provide and immersion is far greater then Rome 2 will ever provide even with a zillion patches.
At least in rome 1 the AI actually will assualt your walls. At least in Rome 1 we have familys and men we care about. At least in rome 1 we have better buildings tree to build in vanillla. At least in Rome 1 we had a more functional phalanx. At least in Rome 1 we had more cohesive units. At least in Rome 1 we could actually see the little stabbing and animations we had, where we cant in rome 2 thanks to battle speed and blobbing. At least in Rome 1 we could control the garrisons. At least in Rome 1 we could raise however many armys we wanted. At least in Rome 1 we had unit variety.

Rome 1 is the better game at present because the AI, while still not all that great, runs circles around the Rome 2 AI. I think there will be some patches in the near future to address this, though, and Rome 2 will end up being a much, much better game. It's already much better if you are the type that autoresolves all of your battles.

I see no problem comparing RS2 to R2TW - like one poster said, CA have had 10 years worth of mods ideas to sift through. They were not starting from scratch. Oh wait, I recall CA recently stating they did start from scratch. Just for the hell of it ;-)

Pretty sure they start EVERY Total War from scratch. So that's nothing new there.
CA actually wants every game to feel completely new and different rather then each one being, "Well, this feels just like Rome 1 but now the graphics are new..." or "Well, I think this is Shogun 2 but now I'm in Europe."
