by the time the game starts in 272 B.C Sparta was nothing more than an insignificant village which only

Nah, it's not just you Grasshopper.... Anyhow, forget the mods in this context, nobody has played all of them anyways (and
in the event that somebody have, they belong to a ridicolously small minority here)... Now... Lets see... Ummm... A....

Somehow Playable Game (RTW1) VS. Total Crash-Fest (RTW2) = RTW1 wins by default (walkover)

As if it could somehow ended in any other way with such circumstances....

Medieval 1/rome 1 and Medieval 2 are all better than rome 2... I feel tactically I could do more than I can now in battles.. only downside is graphics.. I'll may change my opinions once rome2 is polished and less buggy

Bah... only a couple of you played rome 1 on release and if you did you remember the terrible mess it was(worse than empire) on release.
Horrible BAI and CAI(diplomacy BARELY worked), battles felt clunky and weird, moving through cities was god awful, city building was just plain stupid(every city would end up being the same), agents were useless, etc...
Rome 2 is a great game but released a bit too soon, give CA some months worth of patching and then the community will make some memorable mods.

tldr; stop about a great game, it just needs some patches

I played Rome 1 on release and it was nowhere near as bad as Empire. It was bad though, diplomacy didn't "barely work", it was completely broken, there were multiple annoying bugs etc. Rome was the first Total War I played on release and they haven't managed a single proper launch since then. They just can't do it, it's literally impossible. I haven't bought a Total War on release since the piece of crap launch of Medieval 2, until now that is, I usually let my friends beta test them for me. Now I'm regretting letting my love for the ancient Mediterranean suck me into buying this piece of crap. Should've waited at least a year to get it cheap and patched.

Vanilla rome 1 is definitely not better than Vanilla Rome 2. I've not had any crashes playing Rome 2, and i've been playing since release. Though I have noticed the AI doing some stupid things.

Rome 2 is potentially a good game but at the moment is (for me) unplayable
Rome 1 is a fantastic game and is better on so many levels

    Personally, best to worst:
    Shogun 2 > Medieval 2 > Rome 2 > Empire = Rome > Napoleon > Medieval 1 = Shogun 1 (and these two because obviously they haven't aged well, that's all, they're not exactly bad or anything)

Interesting. Well, it seems people really have different opinions. Here is mine, based on the fun I had playing the games:

    Rome 1 > Medieval 2 = Empire > Shogun 2 > Rome 2 = Napoleon
"When your opponent fears you, then's the moment when you give the fear its own rein, give it the time to work on him. Let it become terror. The terrified man fights himself. Eventually, he attacks in desperation. That is the most dangerous moment, but the terrified man can be trusted usually to make a fatal mistake."

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

I have always enjoyed Rome 1 even unmodded and i must have clocked at least over 400 hours on the Vanilla version. Rome 2 is a huge disappointment for me just like Empire was although this time they removed so many features. I always come back to Rome 1 every few months but never any other Total War game it's always been my favourite out of them all

A short and simple statement with a ton of truth in it. Got to rep.

Vanilla Rome was a total mess, and I honestly do not understand why people keep romanticizing this game so much. Even with the amazing mods (RTR, EB, RS) the game had some serious issues. Some minor aspects of the vanilla game was perhaps better (like the soundtrack), but Rome 2 is so much better. I'll be the first one to admit that Rome 2 needs a lot of work, but it's still better than Rome 1 vanilla and Rome 1 with mods.

Agree to disagree. Its obvious we both have a different definition of playability and fun, but back to; To each his own.

I obviously agree that Rome 1 vanilla and modded was very playable and fun. I still remember one of my games with Rome faction in RTR GOLD or platinum (can't really remember) and that was one of the most memorable TW games I've ever had so far. But I feel many in the TW community has the same relationship to old TW games, as normal () people have to ex-girlfriends. You think back and wonder; why the hell did we break up?

But if you try to get back together again, you will see all the flaws she/he had, and all the problems you had in your relationship.

And I proved this to myself the other day, when I tried Rome 1 vanilla and with mods to see if it was as many claims, better than Rome 2. It's not, atleast not for me. The CAI and BAI are insanely stupid. The diplomacy is so retarded it makes me want to cry, you can only recruit one unit each turn. The missions you get from the Senate are very often inappropriate, and dull, I could go on here, but I wont.

I'm staying away from the ex-girlfriend analogy. I agree Rome 1 even with mods has problems, diplomacy one, but I challenge you to try Rome Surrectum2 if you find the time.

It pushes the tech level of Rome vanilla. Battle graphics are astounding compared to vanilla. City building much more advanced. The CAI still won't win any awards, but you'd be surprised how much improved both the CAI and particularly the BAI is in that game. That modding team worked wonders.

If you don't want to go to the trouble to download the game, try youtube, type in Rome Surrectum2 battles and at least get a taste of the epic-ness of the battles.

Rome 2 has potential but has way to many things that need fixing before it can surpass RS2 which I'm been playing of late. Having a blast. Rome 2 has a long way go just to get to the point of being fully patched and even then we won't know how much of the game will play as designed.

However, if you already believe Rome 2 is a good game in its present state then my ranting is wasted and forgive me for taking up of your time. Good gaming

I've played Roma Surrectum 2, and don't get me wrong, I think it's a brilliant mod, but it's still a mod.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trashing the mod, but even in its brilliance it does have a lot of issues. You get CTD's far too often, and in the most annoying places. The scripts are sometimes annoying as hell, the AI (specially the CAI) is still retarded, the autoresolve is VERY unreliable, siege battles can be very buggy, and the game have some balancing issues. I could go on, but that's not the point here, the point is that even with an amazing mod as RS 2, the game has a lot of flaws. And when a great and thorough mod as RS cant beat these flaws, nothing can.

And I'm the first one to admit that Rome 2 is in desperate need of more patching. But in my opinion it's still better than Vanilla Rome, and to some extent Rome with mods. And it is not about the graphics, its the whole picture.

Rome 1 is dated, but was a huge jump compared with the previous game, from 2d to 3d like as we jump from 8 to 80. Rome2 is a jump from 79 to 80,nothing impressed me,the game are full of bad features, its a minor game. Something very wrong happens with Rome2 to be compared with a ten years old game.
