The only thing Rome 2 has going for it are reinforcement changes from previous titles, the stances are neat and the provincial system is growing on me. But other than that, the UI is absolutely trash and the failure of a political system is quite embarrassing. Rome 1 is objectively the better game for its time and is quite superior while modded compared to R2, ignoring the tech advances.

I believe R2TW is fantastic. Whether it's the best depends on the mods that'll follow. Although I'm quite confident it would be the best eventually.

RTW was much more gripping and immersive than TWRII despite all it's (many) faults. Mods made great improvements but there was an awesome, 'breakthrough ' game there to start with. I prefer vanilla RTW to TWRII, that is my honest opinion, I'm not 'trolling' as some would have it. People often say that it's only fair to compare release day vanilla RTW with TWRII but I call total b*llshit on this attitude, CA have had 10 years to make a better version of the game, they should be able to beat the modders after a decade of 'progress', so compare it with the best mods of RTW and it should still be far superior- it's not. (others are entitled to have a different opinion).

The problem with people like the OP is that they define something as better or worse simply through their emotional filter. You will find a lot of posts like that that not only do not offer any coherent and/or reasonable explanation, but they proceed to slap labels such as "bad", "poorly designed" etc. And while there are such features in BOTH games, very rarely do I see a post that offers a reasonable analysis in comparison to the most common posts such as "HUURRR BAD GAME DUUUUR"... Just because on person doesn't like something, does not mean that another one will not. It goes both ways.

For the most part, Rome II does offer new interesting mechanics (especially on the campaign map) that I think are a step in the right direction. In terms of animations, sound etc. everything is pretty much spot on. The issues of the game start to show with some cut content (family tree being the most notable one). I do agree on that part. Also, everyone is preoccupied with pointing out what is missing from Rome 1, while if they completely ignore Rome II's contributions and good ideas. Some people don't really know how to judge a video game that belongs to a franchise and forget that it is also a game on its own.

Then we have the people who condemn Rome II for ALL of its new features/changes. When you try to explain to them how most of the changes are actually not that bad and in fact good, they will do a full reverse to their original statement of Rome II being released unfinished/buggy/glitchy etc. (which is true), after having said something of the sort of being able to look past through technical and AI issues...

RTW became playable after mods such as RTR, EB, SPQR, etc. AND a number of patches and expansions (which improved the AI along the way). In terms of patches: it took good 2 years to get RTW1 to the state you see now.

Other than that, RTW2 has much more potential to be a great game than RTW1. Sure, it is very unpolished in it's current state, but let's see how it develops.

    Rome II all the way!
    “Tolerance, diversity, strength”

    At release, vanilla:

Rome I was like incendiary pigs, burnt out fast and more often than not being near completely useless. But man was it awesome to see it all!
Rome II is like stampeding African war Elephants, unstoppable force prone to running amok,
but their glorious mayhem simply wont stop unless you quite literally pull the plug.

The former was no better than the latter at release and this has been repeatedly been pointed out by senior and veteran players, you may prefer burning pigs over scores of men sent flying but id take II as it simply seem so much more lasting and unwillingness of turning into ashes. The family tree missing is my main annoyance as well, but that falls short against the sheer simplicity and poor challenge of Rome I whoms political system was barely any more explained than II's.

Even if we talk about current state as implied, Rome II still wins out in everything but the family tree...

I agree with you that Rome II has more potential. Question is if this potential can be used (And this depends on the possibility how in depth this game will be able to be modded....).

RTW became playable after mods yes. But Mods are out of the question. The thread question is "Rome 1 vs Rome 2" and not "Rome 1 with Mods vs Rome 2". And in comparison of both vanilla games, I see Rome 2 far superior.

I am hardcore TW series fan, I was there from very beginning. I remember playing vanilla Rome 1 for ages. And as for Rome 2 (vanilla too), after a week I am done. I cant help it and its very sad moment for me, but just cant help it. Rome 2 is arcade style rubbish with lost TW spirit... (arcade style is not the only problem of course)

Same here, and there's plenty more of us out there. I put 80 hours into seeing a few good things in R2, but found it too boring, to many problems, no spirit of grandeur or any feel of being epic as we felt for Rome 1 and it's mods.

Most non hardcore TW players won't understand what the hell I'm talking about, nor the great let down of feeling a game that awed our imagination for years of what 'Rome 2' would be and achieve. Adding to that let down, we get instead a broken $20 casual player game, and apparently loaning CA $40 to patch and repair it for us when they get the time.

I have gone from outraged to sad to well lets see what CA comes up with. Maybe, just maybe they'll fix it enough so modders could combine to a degree R1 and R2, but I fear the core design of R2 is too deficient for a modder to pull it off without CA doing a major expensive upgrade.

SEGA/CA has lost me as a customer. No new games or paying for DLC. CA has chosen another path and we'll just have to go ours. If they prove me wrong on where their going with Rome 2 and really make it worthy of the name, I might reconsider my no buy policy, but not my no preorder policy.

So it back to the Rome1 mods and some hope on the renewed interest in the modding of Medieval 2 from the EB team, but it's any body's guess when it'll be out. Still something to look forward to, that and seeing how far CA takes R2, lala land or to iron, blood and oh hell who am kidding. Lets stick with the hope EB team gets the next real Rome 2 out soon. Meanwhile I'm playing Rome Surectum2. Hang in there.

What a beautiful speech! It made me tear up a bit...not because I agree with it, but because there is so much *facepalm* moments in it.

As I said, most non-hardcore TW gamers won't understand a thing I'm talking about. And my PC plays R2 near maxed out. Weak computers is not what the problem Rome 2 has, its lazy design and lack of any soul. One man' treasure is another man's trash. I do not hate R2, I see potential, but I want to play it without getting bored to tears.

As a buyer I do hope they advance the game. Not holding my breath on how much CA will go to repair, oops sorry, it's a great game as is. You like the game, good for you. If you feel you got your 60$ worth good for you. If you're depending on CA to improve the game to get your $60 game, good luck with that. We all are in the same boat on that.

Deferent strokes for deferent folks, which really is most of the underlining reason for the storm in this forum.

I guess it's all about the feeling. And true if you did not play Rome I when it came out, you can't know what that feeling was. For sure this feeling with these series TW won't come back and it can't. Gaming is all about the psychology behind it, what does the player feel. The soul many of us hardcore TW players talk about has indeed left the game, a pity.

    @stackero
Like I said one post before... It is not about mods here! Without the modcommunity Rome 1 had it would not have his reputation today.

    @SirPeacemaker
Well, to be fair. Rome 1 was revolutionaere in its visuals and the gameplay. Controlling huge 3D Armies, let them fight in Formations or let them attack huge cities was new and special. And the combination with the turn based campaign map gameplay made it finally unique until today. So every Game after Rome 1 had the heavy burden to top this, which is quite hard since there is no more dimension to conquer digitally. The devil of gameplay ascension lies in details and polishing them, and we all know how good CA is in that manner
Also never underestimate the Nostalgica-Factor. I know it becasue it affects me massively, too

Well, I kinda quited RomeII now just like I quited vanilla RomeI years ago. When I came back to RomeI, it was with mods like EB and RSII. I'm doing the same with RomeII: the vanilla sucks, I'm waiting for mods.

Hated recruitment and city management in rome 1 and Mediaval , I prefer the new system. It was to much time conssuming before.
I prefer Rome 2 over Rome 1 anytime

What would make Rome II Perfect FOR ME (oppinion only)
    -I miss the family tree.
-I would like better AI in Rome 2 BAI and CAI

I preferred the old recruitment and replenishment system, unlike some say, you didn't have to take the whole army back to a settlement, you raised replacements in your settlements and sent them out to join the army which was much more realistic. You could send a young noble with them if you wanted and this was the days when your characters were like real people with an independent existence.

Rome 1 was absolute garbage without mods, and Rome 2, even unpatched, is a superior game.
