The music is most definitely better !!! I mean the battle music in rome 1, oh the nostalgia, i sure hope mods can bring that music back to rome 2! but in therms of graphics, gameplay, rome 2 wins.
Nope, never going back to Rome 1 un-modded.
Also, it runs slower in battle, yet, I could MTW2 all high in battle with less lag.
Guessing Rome 1 only use one core?

I prefer RTW, even vanilla.
If you have a computer fully capable of playing R2TW in all its glory, there is NO way in hell you would ever suggest that RTW was better than R2TW. NO CHANCE in hell. RTW was a giant mess of a game with ahistorical units, goofy game mechanics, and terrible CAI. Not to mention compared to the beauty of R2TW, it looks like crap.
Modded Rome 1 blows TWR2 out of the water. I still play EB and RS2. When CA fix the outrageous bugs and introduce some minor DLC + one or two expansions I suppose TWR2 will be the best Total War yet. It's just sad that they still after all these years can't launch a proper product and we have to wait for them to fix and finish some features.
Rome 1 soundtrack is waaay better. Actually I think it's better than the soundtracks of all the mods combined.

@Anthonius, also they completly missed to bring a system of PSF, which could make the game really intense. And this is a shame. Once you conquered the capital of your foes, the game is finished.
The actual game don't reflect the complexity of ancient world with leagues(like greeks and italians had), its not the question of the number of provinces, but the substance of these ones.
PSF loss was a side effect of the General number limitation and the lost abillity that troops can not march of stay in a place without the genaral's pressence.
Generals must be able to build forts and have the abillity -only in forts- to leave at least 1 unit in them.
Border forts were the basis of most of western european cities....
That feature -with a solution-must return too.
TGC in order to continue its development seak one or more desicated scripters to put our campaign scripts mess to an order plus to create new events and create the finall missing factions recruitment system. In return TGC will give permision to those that will help to use its material stepe by step. The result will be a fully released TGC plus many mods that will benefit TGC's material.
Despite the mod is dead does not mean that anyone can use its material

Sorry but Music is absolutely subjective. I think the Rome1 Soundtrack was good, but not THAT good. It had his annoying tracks as well. I think Rome 2 Soundtrack is also good, especially the campaign music is great. Strangely both Menutracks are just annoying for me
The best Total War Soundtrack for me goes to both Broken Crescent and Roma Surrectum 2. Just amazing and on top of my list of best game soundtracks ever. Compared to those two the Vanilla TW Soundtracks were.
The UI is also partly subjective (artdesign). In terms of functionality however, the Rome 2 UI is very good and better than the one from Rome 1(Just missing the excellent Skill Tree from Shogun 2).
For the time difference you are right. Generally speaking older games tend to beat newer games in terms of gameplay, the most important part of Games (Who would have thought that). But in the specific case of Total War this is just not true. I would say the gameplay depth of Total War Games were on par since Medieval 2, they just changed the focus ( In Medieval 2 it was Religion, In Empire it was trade and different continents, In shogun 2 it was trade and diplomacy, In Rome 2 it is supposed to be Family/ Politics and Diplomacy (Too bad Family and Politics is still a broken gameplay element) ). But the gameplay of Rome 1 is very flat and dull when you compare it to newer TWs.
I remember the Rome 1 release well and the BAI was worse than Empire, the factions poorly researched and i simply can't get warm for clone armies anymore, sorry.
Rome 1 was definitely better designed (both mechanically and aesthetically) than Rome 2, but it was plagued by bad AI and less authentic units (but the units were easy to mod out so that's negated). It also had a limited number of factions, but Rome 2 does not really do this that much better because most of the minor factions are copy-pasted material. Naval battles do exist in Rome 2 but they're horrible to play, so that's not really a positive for Rome 2.
If you can go play the Rome1 mod; Rome Surrectum 2 and tell me its as or more boring than Rome 2, then you just have a different definition of fun, and of course I understand, some people like playing in a different style game. But to me, better to have 19 exiting factions to play than a 100 boring factions.
I agree it is unfair to compare a polished mod from Rome 1, to an incomplete vanilla game like Rome 2. I have to clench my teeth every time I call that game, Rome 2. I expected so much more from it, but I'm growing use to the reality that it's just going to be a different style game, not an improved and advanced replacement for Rome 1 with new challenging AI.
However, if, and I emphasize, 'if' CA repairs the game enough for modders to make real changes, maybe we can get the best of both worlds, Rome 1 and 2. I'm trying to get more optimistic about this than I have been. It's still hard to put my trust in CA.

Rome Total War with a good mod is better than Rome 2. Substantially. Without, no. Unfortunately, the Rome 2 engine is such that the superlative RTW mods will see no equivalent in the former.
Rome 1 was a steaming pile of pigs rectums, and Rome 2 destroys it.
Have you played any of the mods for Rome 1? I suspect not. Rome Surrectum2 the most advanced, but Rome 1's many mods offers a host of improvements over vanilla R1, even deferent time periods. Even so, to each his own.
Rome 2 still as yet, has a long way to go to achieve the Olympian status you crown it. But let us all hope CA tries for such a status. As a buyer and experienced player of Rome 2, I do look forward to what improvements trustworthy CA comes up with in the next 6 months.
