I am referencing one link between the campaign to the battlemap; In Rome 1 the tile your forces stood on was represented on the battlemap just much more detailed. In Rome 2 if I remember correctly it's randomly generated from a set of maps.
The rest was just making fun of the color scheme that Rome 2 uses.
I agree with your assessment completely BroskiDerpman, on the link between the campaign to the battlemap.
I was just pointing out my like for the map starting out in the beginning of the game.

Agreed, the map especially looks barren when you have a zoom out camera mod. Then when you use that mod you start to notice how silly the whole map looks.
I agree how the maze map style only really works for Shogun 2. At least in Shogun 2 it made sense as Japan has quite a few mountains. One of the main problem I had in Shogun 2 is when you have a low level settlement and then have a full stack of troops; it becomes a turkey shoot for the enemy, the rest of my annoyances were minor but CA could've corrected them and some could be modded in.
Of course it is all just my own opinion and of course when some one speaks their thoughts there are emotions or else why would that be an opinion... (A disclaimer)
Yes, this is the problem, a barren empty feel as the map begins to reveal itself after a short time of play, and the constricted nature of the map allowing little strategic maneuvering, unlike Rome 1.
I can''t comment on Shogun 2 much. I refused to buy because of Empire, Napoleon too, and I really wanted Nap bad. But CA got their revenge on me in the end, no pun intended.
I fell for the dishonest hype, and preordered. I should have known better, but it was 'Rome 2', surely they wouldn't mess that up. Opps, going off topic.

Notice how the RTW campaign map (modded or not) looks far more 'alive' and vibrant. It looks so fresh and living.
Rome II campaign map is good, but not enough when compared to RTW's modded maps. Sure, more provinces and a larger focus, but it comes with more downfalls than it is worth.
Campaign map in Rome II is plain dead, with hardly any signs of life apart from the armies and agents. Just one running trade route through the capital with a few traders going around, and that's about it. Maybe a few ships too, from a trade port.
The worst problem is the coastlines. They look like some 8 year old kid designed some boxes and blocks of cliffs for the coastlines, instead of proper smooth curved shores. It looks like someone in 1980s tried to make a box-shaped pixelized map of Europe and Middle East. It is nothing close to the great realistic coastlines of Shogun II, or any game of this decade.
The mainland too has problems. They tried to imitate Shogun II system, which only works for Japan and nowhere else. The whole map is full of tiny corridors and mountain valleys, even in massive plain areas like France. Where there are no mountains on the sides of the roads, there are forests. CA is trying to 'guide' the player by forcing him to go only in certain paths. Probably to aid the pathetic AI that doesn't know where to march using his armies. But this creates problems, as less than 25% of the map is actually accessible. And where the player finally finds some empty plain ground for moving his armies, there come the oversized cities that cover all that area. There is nothing left for battlegrounds or maneuvering.
Compare the Cyprus and the Balearic Islands of Rome II to the ones in vanilla RTW and it's mods. I bet you will find the latter much more authentic and good in quality.

Just to point out, Rome II doesn't use fixed templates for battlemaps like Shogun II, it uses real-time battle maps based on campaign, like in the old RTW. Shogun II, Empire and Napoleon, however, did use the templates.
That is where the problem comes up. The campaign map itself is butt ugly, with everything being nothing more than boxes and blocks of cliffs. These show up in battles too.![]()

I've looked at the files....Rome2 certainly does NOT use a battlefield map like RTW or M2TW. The only connection between the strat map and the battlefield you play on is map point that scuttles you over into a 'canned' map that is randomly generated. In fact, their are only two cities that are 'unique' in Rome2...Rome and Carthage. All the rest, as far as I have been able to determine, are all the same. Also, this strat map was constructed to 'funnel' the player into certain areas of the map, as well as the AI, so that the 'conversion' or transfer of a battle to the canned map would be easier (far fewer points on the map, or areas on the map to worry about. The rest of the map is dead and useless.
I do believe the game 'tries' to match the battlefield to the strat map, but it has been mentioned before that this is not always the case. In effect, the whole system is a cheap imitation of the way previous TW maps were dynamically related.

Wow, that RS2 Legionary looks far better than Rome II's legionaries with goldfish mouths.
I am still wondering which is true - the templates or the dynamic maps. The game imitates the campaign map so closely (even depicting those ugly cliffs everywhere) yet sometimes it can be random enough.
Though I can confirm at least a good degree of dynamism. Roads are depicted as they should be, cliffs and other things are also depicted as they should be. Templates are used in cities and towns for sure.

Thousands of people pointing out objective failings of a game with one person spamming each thread on TWC about how great it is doesn't make it true.
Hilarious screenie, a favorite moment shared by many I'm sure!
PS.
10 year old Rome I dogs look better than, Rome II's low texture dogs... they don't even have different colored paws. it's crazy! In general Rome II's art department is really good, but they really dropped the ball on a few things.
RII is a sad downgrade of RTW, only a moron wouldn't see that.
