With R2TW it seems that they dumped some enjoyable sub-features for no good reason. Reinventing the wheel is not a good reason.
They did say they want every TW to feel different, so for Rome 2 they just tried a game that had a greater focus on the empire and combat, while lessening the focus on politics and characters. This hasn't been a very popular decision with TWC.

CA definitely seem to have gotten their wires crossed between marketing and development. You have the live action adverts and even the reversible cover on the game packaging, suggesting that character and politics will be important in the game. Furthermore, if the design team wanted an new emphasis on empire and combat, then why the short battles? All that lovely combat animation (and tis!) lost in blobbing and quick battles. By all means have a different look and feel to the game but you have to have some reasoning behind it and some data to back up your claims.

I must say, I agree to a point, but let me add my input into your post.

'They did say they want every TW to feel different,'.
This CA did with great success with Rome2. (sarcasm)

"for Rome 2 they just tried a game that had a greater focus on the empire and combat'
This CA utterly failed to do.

"while lessening the focus on politics and characters"

This CA succeeded at brilliantly with R2. With no immersion.

.This hasn't been a very popular decision with TWC.
    That is an understatement.

    Good gaming.

"Well, this feels just like Rome 1 but now the graphics are new..." If they did that Rome 2 would be a resounding success.

I'd much rather have a new game every installment, then have CA begin to "Call of Duty"-fy their game series: where you get the same game, but they just changed the looks around everytime.

CA started it from scratch? ... wow...
They've had 10 years worth mods that covered different eras, fantasies and realms for inspiration and analytical purposes and they ended up producing a game like R2TW..
I'm sorry to say but this latest game feels like a cheap knock-off a series I once knew..

Its essence as Total War game is completely gone with a few remnants to remind us of what it could have become potentially.
They truly failed at creating a believe Roman world by stripping off all the features we loved and define the TW factor
I can go on and mention the reasons why I think so but I don't want to repeat myself
Please refer to my post at the complaint thread

You mean just to name a few. Is there anyone out there that has played Rome2, and hate it or love, who believes CA went backwards with game design except of course in graphics when they work right.

I Admit, pictures don't tell the whole story but its obvious RS2 type mods has epic-ness.
Rome 2 as of now, has no soul.

I remember the last time playing RS2, I was in a battle with phalanx vs phalanx and it would take a long time to resolve if they fought head on! and not 5 seconds !!!

    Good vid example.

It still amazes me that something CA has done well or adequately in the past, they utterly fail in R2. I have many complaints about R2 but the battles and sieges even, should not be at the top of that list.

Imo the critical detail here is that RTW is over a decade older than R2TW, and yet the latter fails in all aspect to actual improve on anything beyond the expected visuals. CA has had so much to help them make a decent game and yet they choose the catering path while blatanly maintaining their "we love our fans" policy - which purely is BS. There is really nothing R2TW has that wants to make me buy it and for all intent and purposes it has full shattered my trust to CA. They are now about as credible as EA, if not less.So all in all I think NTW was the last game for me. I didn't buy Shogun purely because the setting doesn't appeal to me, despite that I hear it was a solid game. This crap however, is completely unreoverable, and all the patching is simply done to win back some trust so they can begin rolling out all the DLC's they have in store and not to actually fix a fundementally broken product. I just hope that when Will, Craig, Jack, etc comes back here with a new title that the sensible part of the community will ignore or ridicule them.

My only problem with RTW is that my GPU seems to hate the game, otherwise I'd be playing RS2 instead of darthmod NTW. I can easily live with the significantly smaller battle scale. Speaking of battle scale I find it amusing that a fairly large portion of the people here can't play battles in R2TW that are much bigger than in RTW without serious performance issues... It's priceless really.

Really? Naval battles, politics, client states, piracy, trade resources, hundreds of factions, . . .

The game fails because the AI is terrible. Everything else is a major step forward, and I think that patches and mods will improve the AI to the point that it is at least tolerable.

Mods are overrated, the only mod that actually added something interesting to RTW was the Rise of Persia mod, the other mods were basicly just the same remake of the era and basicly identical to eachother.

I liked playing Rise of Persia played it a few years ago and will likely try again in the near future.

However, the rest of your statement reveals you've played very few of the other mods or you're just trying to stir the pot.

Now you're just being plain silly. I almost busted a gut over that one. But thanks for the humor break. Its good to have a little comic relief on occasion.

Be careful around here, you can't say anything bad about the mods (not the moderators!), if you do, people basically think you're a troll.

A lot of work goes into those mods, but they're far from these kind of perfect, examples of gaming. They're works of love, but that's about as far as I'd say they go.
