Who else thinks that Rome Total War & Its Mods is better than Total War: Rome 2 ?.

I went back to playing the first game as i think the newest game is an utter disgrace to the franchise and thats my opinion on the matter .

I have just started a new campaign as Rome and i have the RS installed i must admit its more fun to play even if it came out all them years ago its certainly better than the new game.

RS is a great game... but it still lacks a lot of what Rome 2 has.

Better Graphics.
More units.
Better campaign map.
More options including dignitaries, champions and spies with more abilities.
Technologies.
Better diplomacy.
Better city sieges. More unique maps.

Yes Rome 2 has AI problems like a lot of games. If you can do better go and make your own game.

You left out one very important fact; RS2 is fun in spades to play and has that grandeur feel. R2 does not.

Roma Surrectum 2 has 2 tpy or 4 tpy with Primo submod added Epic battles and sieges, immersive building construction in cities, generals that live and breath, so to speak, by achieving skills on the battlefield and producing sons who will come of age to train as you see fit; generals or governors.

RS2 has the best BAI I've ever experienced in any mod of Rome 1 and I've play most all of them even the highly acclaimed EB1 which is an outstanding mod with its own merits.

Yes, Rome 2 is pretty and has some nice features but most of the things you list don't yet work as designed nor does the AI in the Campaign map or the tactical side of things yet match RS2 and I'm being kind to say R2 has any AI.

To be fair maybe CA will do more than just throw a few dozen patches and DLC at the game, maybe they'll go all out to make the game fun and entertaining. But right now, in my opinion they have a long way to go to get there. Time will tell. I want to play the game with out getting bored.

I hope CA can get there, but doubt they will. What little trust I had left in CA after Empire is now gone, because of their deceptive marketing, again.

True, but when comparing Rome 2 to Rome 1 the first thing I think of is the increase in factions. I am already into a 50 turn game as Macedon and there are a lot of small factions left. The game has a lot more potential for replay-ability. I often became bored with Rome I mods (never played the original beyond the first week), I couldnt finish a game because the middle game ended with large empires. Every game evolved the same and that was with small main faction states swallowing up other states and rebel territories to create a huge empire. Like a German tribe in RS or something conquering everything from Northern Italy and Illyria to Denmark. It became very frustrating.

Rome II triumphs in that.

Yes the graphics are better and thats a huge plus.

The BAI is better as well. Battles are a whole lot more fun.

And something I left out earlier: the LoS, one of the best features added to TW. I have ambushed so many other players in online matches with this.

whether "rpg"-like assigning of abilities is better or worse than the old way of gaining traits is another discussion, but yeah, all of them can do more stuff(tm) like assassinate, or assassinate, and even assassinate, or make armies game XP every single turn despite them doing nothing... like, that's totally not OP or unbalanced and obviously makes them "better"

have been done in RS (and many other mods) as "building trees". nothing fancy or "better" moving them to a separate screen

if by that you mean "the same old siege AI that couldn't find its pants if they were over its head", then yeah, they're "better". or maybe you mean the dozens of (even worse) sieges on un-walled settlements because now only a third of the settlements can build them because... CA says so?

huh? ah, maybe you mean like "there are 12 wonders in RTW2 while only 7 in RS2!" (but only 2 show up on maps in RTW2, unlike all 7 in RS2)

please, don't be one of the blind fanboys. if you were talking about RTW1 vanilla, i'd agree wholeheartedly, but you chose to talk about a mod... it's literally a "shameful display" that a team of a couple hundred professionals couldn't achieve half the stuff a team of half a dozen amateurs did on their (CA's) very own 10 year old engine!

and than there's that atrocious UI, the horrible optimization, all the false advertising, the (inevitable) tons of rip-off DLCs, etc etc...

Just bought rome 2, think I will stick to NTW! And Rome 2 is running so slow cant be arsed messing about with patches, gameplay isn't as good for me in rome 2, bit disappointed as expected more, graphics are good though

I guess the original Rome 1 was so great because it was so basic and bare as a simple Simulation-Game that everything could be added and changed on top of it.

Trying to Mod CA's latest games is going to be a pain I guess, so either CA has to make the game easier to mod or actually fix some of the major problems with the game.

I disagree. The only thing that was better in Rome 1 was the family tree. That was it. I tried to play Rome 1 just for the sake of this thread. Guess how long that lasted?

It's a kind of unfair comparison, Roma Surrectum 1 came out like 4 years after Rome 1 did - the only thing you can take from that comparison is that Rome 1 is infact easier to mod than Rome 2. Rome 2 is buggy as all hell, but the core ideas of the game are not worse than the original game

Of course it is "somehow" unfair to compare the hideous Beta-rubbish of RomeII with a over years and years of mod-work polished Rome I,
(anyway Rome I vanilla isnt as rediculous as Rome II Vanilla in present state - so I choose with the first Rome over the present crap)
So despite the difference - still I go with Rome I with Roma Surrectum II 2.6 (released 3 months ago !!! )
That degree of dedication to the gameplay experience from Dvk, Darth anmd all the other Rome I and MedII modders we will never experience from CA/Sega in the future,
sry but for me it is just plain clear, no doubt that CA will disappoint with the fully patched Rome II also.

its fair game to compare modded rtw to vanilla r2tw, CA has had all this time to learn from the mods and hopefully improve their games but the only lesson they learned is the historical accuracy. everything else just went right up over their heads.
