http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeZOBIUL7JMI thought testudo should be strong against missile.. But after seeing this, i guess its not...

I have not play as Rome yet, but my guess would be you should come up with something better then standing still (in fancy formation and uniform) and getting massacred from afar as your main strategy. Seriously, this is game. Game = simulation of activity by using set of rules.

The difference is you can run if you are not in a testudo and only walk if you are, the set of rules completely negate one of the options presented.

This video is better it shows two units in testudo and two units that are not being shot at by arrows. They rout at the same time and loose the same amount of men, the testudo is totally pointless. Although I use it because I like the way it looks and when my units are fully upgraded I rarely loose more than 20% of my men no matter the odds.

The problem of Testudo is that in vanilla they give a substantial bonus only to shield armour. Since armour in this game is much less effective than defense (for the way AP works) increasing the armour stat does very little.

The solution is to simply increase also shield defense by a good amount along armour. Many mods have already done this and the problem is effectively resolved. Much probably CA will do the same in a future patch.

Shield defense is just melee defense. It should do nothing against projectiles. CA couldn't fathom why they would need any stats other than melee defense and armor.

.....Dude, there is an entire cult here devoted to see the in-game Testudo burn. Nobody uses it.

    Yeah, it's pretty ed.

The arrows go through their shields. Needs patched pronto.

What's the point in having this fancy hit detection on shields, where the arrows stick in them, if it kills the soldier regardless?

Just another head scratcher to how CA could make an integral part of Rome just not work. I mean EVERYONE knows the Testudo right? So how could they Fail it?

I never use it either. It looks half done.

I see, so at least the testudo seems got a little bit better when upgraded to cohorts. I see the potential if they patch up its defense a bit. I like how it is easily breakable when fatigue rises. It makes the player have to move it.

There is this citing of the testudo by Josephus which he describes in this way.
while, on the side of the Romans, fresh men still succeeded those that were thrust down; those encouraging one another, and joining side to side with their shields, whihc were a protection to them, they became a body of men not to be broken; and as this band thrust away the jews, as though they were themselves but one body, they began already to get upon the wall.
28: then did Josephus take necessity for his counselor in this utmost distress, and gave orders to pour scalding oil upon those whose shields protected them. Whereupon they soon got it ready, being many that brought it, and what they brought being a great quantity also, and poured it on all sides upon the Romans, and threw down upon them their vessels as they were still hissing from the heat of the fire; this so burnt the Romans, that it dispersed that united band,- The Great Jewish War. 6:27-28
I think this describes that testudo as having protected also the sides. What do you guys think?

I'm just going to be honest here.

CA did admit that they are looking into the Testudo as there seems to be seem issues which others have already pointed out.

On my end though even in RTW I very very rarely used Testudo. In RTW2 I find I have even less reason to use it as units already raise their shields anyways when closing in to attack.

A lot of people(not everyone) around here belong to 2 groups:
    1. Don't have any idea about scutum and think that Testudo are invincible against missile
    2. Roman fanboy

If you belong to the first group pls look back history and find out why so called invincible testudo get massacred by Parthian. If you are the second then I have nothing to say to you since no matter what i say you won't listen.

Quit whining and deal with it!

The testudo so far only have a little too low bonus for the shield compare to phalanx or shield wall. It work it just not as good as it should be and need a little buff. Testudo won't make your army march the whole distant under missile fire unharmed.

Facing missile superiority make you have to get close in as fast as you can not making turtle and roll

There is a lot of room between invincible and useless.
