    Default Stereotyping Barbarians

Come on CA I figured youd be better then Rome 1 in this light. Bringing back naked fanatic and shirtless men. Really? The "Barbarian factions" where so much more and had such a defined culture. I dont feel like you guys did them justice. Also what the hell is it with them having so many sword units esp the seubi who are germanic. For one swords required alot of skill and metal to make so only the best would have them in these tribes. The Axe would of been a more realistic choice.Thirdly stop trying to be Shogun 2 and burn down gates. In Japan this makes sense everything was wood. But In Rome when most of the gate is stone?! Come on guys then why bother adding so many cool siege weps. CA Im disappointed so much.

Yeah, I think everyone is disappointed with the torching of gates. It really makes sieges boring, AI in sieges are pretty terrible. They don't even use the siege towers, rams or ladders. They bring catapults and take down your walls in 30 seconds, which gives no use to have missile units on the walls. It's far from their older versions where they had it right.

You want supremely accurate history then go read a book.

You fully understand the complaint which is a genuine and logical, yet you intercede to say nonsense because you don`t like it. You can`t even contribute anything at all helpful except an undeserved derisive remark.

Well i`m here to right the balance and tell you that you shouldn`t have entered the thread at all.

The burning gates is dumb and why not correct the sword issue, though it is to my mind, not the worst of the issues.

Im not one of those crazy "This needs to be a 100% accurate" history nuts, on a second note for the barbarians. They should have an archer unit. Christ they live in a Forest. Shouldnt just have javelins and slings.

The barbarian sword units do have a 25% chance to be wielding an axe btw.

I do agree about burning metal gates though..

Indeed, the numerosity of swords in Rome 2 is ridiculous.

The Romans were the first professional army to use the sword as its primary weapon in Europe. This set them apart as they spent the extra money and time to forge swords rather than affix a sharp piece of metal to a stick and pass it to the soldiers.

It kind of takes away from that when every Celt in the woods has a sword. >

The encyclopedia mentioned only warriors who had proven themselves time and again on the battlefield can bear a sword. That's history. Players can create an army full of elite swordsmen. That's game. If you want the game to stick to history, then get CA to enforce realistic recruitment: a player's army must consist of x% spearmen, y% skirmishers, z% light horse, 5% swordsmen.

Why do they have swords? Balance. Axes would have AP bonuses and slower attack, so in the early game they'd be underpowered against the 'civilized' factions.

Um, I'm pretty sure the "naked fanatics" existed. What about the Gaesatae? And considering that there's plenty of shirtless units for the Celtic and Germanics factions in Europa Barbarorum, a mod that was created for the purpose of giving "Barbarians" more justice, I'm pretty sure that's accurate too. Do you have any source that proves otherwise?

Actually a spear would of been the main choice for Germanics. There aren't any artistic depictions of them with axes until the 4th Century A.D.

    +1.

    I just realised how what I said may have been misconstrued;

I was referring to the Mediterranean and barbarian armies having a majority use of spears over swords. Not axes.

    A quote from Tacitus
the foot-soldiers also scatter showers of missiles, each man having several and hurling them to an immense distance, and being naked or lightly clad with a little cloak. There is no display about their equipment: their shields alone are marked with very choice colours. A few only have corslets, and just one or two here and there a metal or leathern helmet.

Antiquity was the age of the shield and the spear, it's true that so many swords doesn't make a lot of sens.

100% agreed with the OP. I'm a barbarian and I find all of this horribly offensive.

Since when do the Suebi have too many swords? There´s just two units: Swordmasters and Berserkers. The rest is armed with Clubs (Levy and Bloodsworn) or Spears (Levy, Brothers and Wodanaz). Wouldn´t hurt to have some axe-armed units though.
