Default Rome 2 downgraded by two german magazines

German magazine gamestar corrected the grade for Rome 2. The original 89% were changed to 84%.

    Reasons:
    - AI
    - lame late game
    - boring, purposless features (e.g. internal politics)
    - UI (counterintuitive, to many unnecesary clicks)

Couple of days ago another magazine gamersglobal (administrated by a gamestar founder) changed the grade from 8.5 to 7.5

    Reasons:
    - AI
    - lame late game
    - boring, purposless features (e.g. internal politics)
    - UI (counterintuitive, to many unnecesary clicks). Especially following quote is true (CA I hope you are listening): "The guy who decided to change the beatyful icons for units and buildings by something strange what would fit an Hacker-Adventure game or Windows 11, should never ever touch any historical game."

Well, looks like they still like it a lot, giving it 84%. Despite bad AI, lame late game, useless features etc..
The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.

Still how can they downgrade of a few % admitting those very important game flaws? But most importantly how they did review the game the first time then if they gived high score ? Did they play at all?

Hmm, the magazines obviously think it's okay to now adjust the score. CA's money supply for artificially inflated scores must be running out.

The game is fine. Yes, it's a 7.5 game instead of an 8.5 game. I wouldn't call it either lame or boring. Those magazines got it right the second time. As for the first scores, the probably expected the (not that many) glitches and bugs would be corrected by launch.

Or they finally got their payrolls (question is from whom?^^) and now can give a more honest rating.

TW and Paradoxgames need hundred of hours of play to finally judge them. That is why the german magazin 4player.de judged Europa Universalid after over a month of playing, after the release and Rome 2 allmost 2 weeks after the release.

Fully agree with you. Most magazines don't wanted to be behind the competitors so they released their previews right after the embargo was lifted. The correct way to test such games is do play it some weeks and theny afterwards to write a review.

You can see that the games were downgraded though the reasons are not really "visiable" since they use the original reviews, some of the new negative points are highlighted but not all. You have to know the original text to see the adjusted points completely.

Besides, I kinda like the new building and especially the unit icons, at least they're innovative and more artistic, besides they can easily be modded I believe
What do too many clicks to do with new features. This problem is caused by the bad UI design and not by new features. You can have a complex and deep game with a good interface that avoid too many clicks and one that is very simple but with a catastrophical UI.

    For examples see here.

As you can see the examples used there are features incorporated since a long time in TW games. In fact my example with agents is explicitely mentioned by Gamestar as an example for too many clicks and by the way in another magazine as well.

What has that got to do with the thread? The reviews are neither negative nor hateful. The topic is about downgrades/corrections and not about hate or something else.

Also, 89 down to 84 is like A to an A-; unless your parents are Asians, it's kind of the pointless, attention-whore kind of downgrade.
An 8/5 to a 7.5 also sounds likes like they're thinking from "it's quite great!" to "It's only OK". Still grossly generous, IMO.

Personally I give it a zero. Incomplete, overemphasis on presentation, technical problems, faulty existing features, it's like a school project that totally ignored the criteria and wasn't even finished when presented in front of the class. ANy sensible professor would immediately give a zero, especially considering their insistence that it was great, and the unwarranted changes made are excellent, if only worked on long enough.

    No dice, instant zero.

More evidence that scores are of no use when judging a game.

That's interesting. One magazine copied change of ranking by other magazine.

CA aren't stupid, I think they will learn a lesson from this. The progression from Empire to Napoleon to Shogun 2 and it's expansions have all been great trying out different things. Hopefully they pull it out of the bag with the next Total War (or expansion). Sad to say though, £44 and launch day DLC for a game that was half broken with lots problems, it's defiantly a low point for the series.
