The answer is pretty easy if you take a step back. Medieval II was made in 2007 and the engine that is was built upon was a heavily modified version of Rome Total war. Back then polygon counts and texture resolutions were much more of a concern in what can eat up performance in games, thus that's why everything back then was of lower poly count and lower texture quality. Meaning lower resolution models/textures = faster optimization and processing. Also Medieval II uses a last generation rendering system of using only a diffuse, specular, and normal map, which is no where near as good as today's modern PBR rendering (or Rome II's custom PBR-esq rendering). Also what kills it a bit more is that Medieval II processes normal maps on a depth of 0 to 1, unlike today where engines can process a depth of -1 to 1.

In the end, yes Medieval II will always look last gen in comparison to Rome II or Warhammer, however with today's tools and texturing programs you can vastly improve the quality of the models (which is what I am doing for fun). It won't look up to par, but if done right will give a solid coat of new polish.
Ah right I thought it'd be a technical thing relating to the age of Medieval 2's engine.
All the best with the work, I'll continue to follow it with interest

Ugghhh I feel terrible for being this late to the party. A bunch of stuff hit me over the past two months (or more?) so that consumed a lot of time. Also I'm not the kind of guy who likes to show off stuff unless there is some actual progress. Also I learned that all of my previous image links are broken due to Photobucket's ransom bullcrap practice of not letting images posted onto 3rd party websites. So here are some completed/wip stuff. Enjoy!

    Open Source Weapon Pack

A Huscarl like character. More explanation later, still a big WIP

A Sci Fi gun that I'm working on for fun when I get tired of character work.

Just to be pedantic (as usual ):
    - the monster ribs should be more curved inside the body when close to the rear legs. Something like this (to get an idea):

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    - the leather seams on the Huskarl mail protections around the neck are reversed compare to those on his shoulders. Same on the bottom of the mail suit. Actually, I think there should be none on the mail suit

    Anyway, good job as usual
Btw, if you have time to spend (but without any hurry), I have a job for you

    Hey Lifthrasir,

thanks for the feed back. Didn't notice the seams part but the leather trim on the mail was a stylistic choice. Found the design feature from the Witcher 3 promo armor and thought it was pretty nifty.

Yeah if you need anything just shoot me a pm.

Well, you can keep the leather trim if you want. It doesn't really matter honestly. I was just giving my own opinion
For the rest, I'll PM you. Thanks Mate

    Two questions about the housecarl.
    How many polygons is it?
Did you model it's face after Jai Courtney?

And about the Open Source Weapon Pack, is there a download link?

How many polys? I haven't counted yet. Probably a lot more after I finish the hair and the fur cape.

I used Matthew Mcnulty as a base and then modified it from there to something else. But on second look he does kind of look like Jai Courtney!

The open source weapon pack is not downloadable yet for I have just a few weapons left to go. That one was on the back burner for a while.

Alrighty! He is done! Here is a few snippets and the full gallery link below! I took my time on this one to get it a good as possible. Personally I am quite pleased on how it turned out.

Also now to finish up some minor projects like that open source weapon pack and that gun!

I must say it is beautifully made.
I must also say that if I could make something like that I would make the armor more akin to historical examples.
    It looks very good nonetheless.

Did you make it with 3dsmax?
And how many polygons is it again?

Very nice. Minor quibble, the way he's holding the sword with his wrist bent like that looks a bit weird but it doesn't detract from the awesomeness of the entire piece.

I get what you are saying with the armor part. The leather trimming was taken from the Witcher 3 promo armor design and I thought that was cool.

Most of it was done in Zbrush, with Maya and Photoshop for Retopology and Texturing. Some stuff was just made purely in Maya then had details added in Zbrush.

For poly count this guy sits at 130k tris. Most of the geometry is located in the Hair and fur, which makes up 40% of the geometry. It's game ready, but a bit heavy for anything but a protagonist in a next gen single player. Hellblade's main character had 80k polygons for her hair.

Did you use Zbrush micro mesh to make the chainmail parts?

    Hola!

My recent job has eaten all of my time so sorry if this reply is a little late. I didn't use Micromesh for the chainmail due to the fact that micromesh has a tendency to stretch objects according to the polygon layout, resulting at times for some ugly looks. Instead I rendered a chainmail pattern out of zbrush (using the depth capture) and did some photoshop work at the end via texturing. Saved time and headaches.

It's been a while since I've posted any work, so below is the WIP as of the moment. Been really busy with compositing for this film over the past two months and hopefully would be done with this before thanks giving... Hopefully. Enjoy!

It's not some hollywood film or anything. It's an indie film back at the old place I used to work at. It's okay pay for the time being and a great experience on how not to make a movie. I've got a couple weeks left till my part is done and finished, later if the director doesn't stop flip flopping on the post production process.
