    Default Civil war WTF?

    Hello there,

I was playing as Carthage. All went quite good, until around turn 60 when the civil war came. Suddenly, 6 or 7 stacks of rebel army appeared around the City of Carthage. Since I had about 3 non-full stack armies I had no chance to defeat them. Game over after few turns. Where is the fun in this?

Anyone else thinks this should be rebalanced?
"When your opponent fears you, then's the moment when you give the fear its own rein, give it the time to work on him. Let it become terror. The terrified man fights himself. Eventually, he attacks in desperation. That is the most dangerous moment, but the terrified man can be trusted usually to make a fatal mistake."

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

I think you can prevent this if you remain on an avg. of 50% gravitas. Don't try to get 100% at your politics otherwise you will get a civil war.

Am I the only idiot who never got to fight a civil war? Or is it because I try to keep my influence between 60% and 80%?

For some reason, whatever I did, my influence with the Partian nobles was always between 45% to 55%. Anything I did to improve it like assassinate other family generals, blackmail, etc had such a big penalty on the nobles of other families that I usually gained no influence.

You lose influence (senators/nobles/chiefs/etc.) to perform actions such as assassinations, rumours, adoptions, etc. You passively regain them if you have more total gravitas than the rival factions, at least that's what I understand so far.

Usually if you don't manage it from turn 1 you end up with a rival statesman with massive gravitas that becomes a power sink and drains your influence (and costs too much to assassinate or discredit). If instead you keep decreasing their gravitas, paying attention not to drop your influence below 50%, and adopt the new generals of their faction, before they become too powerful, it's pretty easy to manage, particularly with non-republic factions.

I was playing as Parthia. All went quite good. Around turn 130-140, civil war came as I expected from the reputation bar saying that Civil war is brewing. Of course, the civil war came waaaay later than I thought. I had 3 full stack armies and I crushed the rebels within 3 turns, losing just one city to them, since they appeared far from the capital.
So in effect I got a big bonus to my relations with my satrapies for crushing 6 pathetic 12-unit armies. It was not a big event, it was a minor, disappointing uprising. I've had as much trouble from them as with rebels.

Yes, it needs rebalancing IMO, but on the OTHER scale of what you suggest. IMO It needs to take a whole province from you, or even TWO provinces if your empire is too large and spawn 4-5 full stacks there or 2-3 full stacks in each province if there are 2 provinces lost.
Also IMO they should "Steal" Satrapies that have low score with you. I had 12 satrapies at the moment and not one went for the Rebels.

I defeated 9 full stacks of elites with one stack and a well fortified city + garrison on very hard. It is not game breaking, and I had fun doing it.

Yeah, maybe I should gently ask the rebels to take all of their stacks, stop taking all my cities in every direction from Carthage and travel to Rome, where is a good garrison and one of my armies so I can also defeat them in one easy siege battle...

Do they start from your faction capital even if you have more than 50% influence? How is their power determined, do they spam 79869 full stacks of elites even if you have like 90% influence?
If they always start in the capital, joke's on them, the Arverni have a minor settlement as faction capital

In my game, they didn't start in the capital. They spawned like 5-6 half-stacks, with a couple good units and took a settlement far away from the capital.
    They were really pathetic.

My influence was at about 50% at the time. Maybe 48 or something.

So what is the trigger to start the civil war? and how can we prevent this?

there is no specific trigger, I think it runs a chance generator at each popularity level, the more unbaleced your relationship is, the easier it gets to trigger the rebellion

and I too would like that the civil war was indeed more severe, whole provinces rebelling and full stacks instead of those 12 unit armies

but if you can take a look at the forums, you will see that if they did that, people are going to complain A LOT

I think civil war would make a lot more sense and be more fun if it was like in the original Medieval game, where your empire was actually completely divided, and some lands and armies went to one side and the others went to the other side.

So what I'd like is that you keep the generals that are part of your party, but the generals from the other families/tribes/whatever rebel against you. The cities undet their influence could also rise up against you, and you'd keep your own. That way, you'd have a real "general X" (your faction leader) versus "general Y" (their faction leader) just like the civil wars from history.

Also, 6-7 stacks is really not that much, check some of the other civil war whining threads

    that certainly could be interesting

Your civil war is a joke, I had 9 full stacks of high quality units spawn on my walled Capital with defensive artilley with another 6 full stack fleets of high quality ships. After 20 turns the rebels where all dead, they took about 3 settlements in that time and I lost about 672 soldiers from my armies and navies if I don't count garrison forces. Spamw them with agents to drain their numbers, since they don't replenish.
