I have a question. Why always make a line with the phalanx? Why don't you position troops behind on the flanks? If being flanked is your weakness, why don't you protect them?
H = Hoplites
---------H--H-----------H--H
-----------H-----H-H-----H
-------------HHHHHHHHH
If I am playing with a phalanx based army, I will surely make a line but I will position 2 or 3 units on its flank, ready to pounce on any flanking move. I like to keep 1 or 2 units behind my line too, if there is a break in the battle line somewhere, I charge them to where they are needed. And I rarely use an army of pikemen. I often have mercenary hoplites while I play the Roman factions. I use them quite effectively, usually spreading them thin infront of my legion, effectively holding the enemy in place and then they are charged by an array of legionaries from the side and cavalry from behind after a quick maneuver. But the simple fact is that making an army based on phalanx units is just silly. I use a mix of units and use them to their best effect, hoplites are ALWAYS defensive units for me, their role is to keep the enemy from advancing. I like to keep spearmen on the flanks behind the battleline too, that decimates any cavalry foolish enough to charge.
But hey, thats just me.
