Default Noticed something really cool about walls

If you put archers on top of walls and stretch them out to only be 1 rank deep then look closely, you can actually see that they will fire an arrow and then actually duck behind the crenallations to reload. Its a really neat touch.

I know this because ive been sitting here, watching a motionless ai army outside of pella get shot by arrows for quite a while now. The battle was a little exciting at first, i lost a general and a whole bunch of troops because my reinforcements spawned right on top of the enemy's reinforcements. Someone might want to look into that.

Sounds good, but I've read that the archers can't fire properly from the wall, and that the wall doesn't protect them either - what's your experience with this?

Currently only the front rank fires from walls which is the main issue, rear ranks won't even try to take cover so it seems like currently the only good strategy is to click on the wall and then drag outside the wall to squish them into a single rank. The problem with this is that it makes it really hard to concentrate your firepower on, say soldiers attacking the gate, and it makes it pretty easy for attacker to clear the walls with their own ranged units simply through volume of fire (walls do provide quite a bit of protection, just usually not enough)

Other than that I think the main issue with archers not firing just comes down to them being so spread out that they are rarely all in range of the enemy at once meaning that only some will actually shoot.

Also, it appears to be only archers that take cover, and only when they are firing, so if they are being outranged by slingers then they will probably just stand there.

Well, my experience is that ranged units on walls still dont shoot properly, usually only a handful are actually doing something while the rest flexes their thumbs, no matter if the unit is supposed to shoot at a target outside- or inside the walls. I have seen the same behavior back in Medieval 2.

I think we all have something that we can't accept, even if it's a minor thing compared to the big and important bugs. For me, this is it.

But I'm quite reasonable, and I have the money ready in my pocket for CA if they ever fix the game, including this bug (which they have had about 7 years to get right)..

What I don't get is how they paid such attention to minor details like this while overlooking major gameplay and AI implications.

Well maybe the AI is really good, the said the truth about it the whole time and the only point is that itīs just heavily bugged due to unsufficient testing (or not testing at all) because they pushed the release date so hard.
That is in my opinion how the whole game and itīs concept seems to be. Really great but just unfinished and untested, which results in placeholder gameplay elements like the current Civil War (Instead of a real Civil War, in which, if your faction population is not happy enough our other families become too powerful, certain generals of other families become hostile and rebell against you or certain cities declare their independence etc.)

I really want to believe that and there is a grain of truth if we were to observe that change of CAI in patch 2. But let's face it - we need results. BAI is still broken, ESPECIALLY in sieges.

I had a Germanic army attack my town. Auto resolve said it would be a decisive defeat, so I controlled the battle. Mounted spear throwers on wall, had infantry in a v formation behind gate. The enemy rushed the gate, but had NO siege equipment. They just stood there and took fire until they routed. I lost ONE man, they lost about 3,000. Pretty good KDR. Horrible BAI.

Yes, sieges are still a major AI breaker, even after all units got the ability to burn down gates (which I dislike, build a ram damnit! you could do it in MTW2).

On the other hand, talking about minor details... I just noticed that when you zoom in on a region with low puplic order, you can hear the uproar and the noise of the displeased population. This game is really shizophrenic, CA thinks about little gems like this while messing up major elements of the game.

guys, forget what the op wrote and try a range unit on the walls yourself it is horrid. I don't know why OP thinks it is great.

I don't know, Ranged units have always worked for me when placing them on the walls. They fire just fine, take less casualties, and gain a nice amount of kills at the end of the battle.
