So for those of you upset at the AI, battle and Campaign. Please hear me out.
I'm playing a Carthage Campaign on legendary right now. Legendary difficulty. Where your camera is limited to your line of site, no map, no pause button.
You cant save the game manually, you have to wait automatically for it save after every end turn. LEGENDARY.
These arnt the only changes. Playing as Carthage, I was declared war on right off the bat by Rome and Garmantia. Thats expected as the game is on the hardest setting. Hardest setting means aggressive AI.
My Ally Carthago Nova is a beast. It controls more areas than I do and often sends armies where I need help to help me fight off any invaders. Rome is at war with Etruscan League, Libya, Carthago Nova and Sparta. And the beginning of this Campaign is a free for all. It actually feels like a modded Total War game, where theres WAR happening all over the place. Syracuse Declares war on me and I crush them. I make them a client state for two turns and boom they declare war on me again! Not only that, they had a stack right next to Carthage. They invade the city. Without ladders, or siege equipment, they only have one way to get inside. So I confidently phalanx my unit at the door, ready to buzz-saw them through.
As predicted they MOB in I cut most of them down. What I didnt see is they had a Unit of horse men run around to the back of the city. Burn down the gate, and take the city center in process. Maybe it was the restricted camera or because I assumed the battle AI would mindlessly throw its men into the blob of death. But I wasnt paying attention to anything else besides that gate. And I lost Carthage. Turns later I retake it and finally destroy syracuse. Happily I am also the one that takes Rome's last settlement and crushes them under my heal. But by the end of what I call The Great Roman War. Italy is dominated by the Etruscan, but a barbarian faction holds a settlement in the north, and Me, Libya and sparta have holdings on italy. Finally the war is over. And I look forward for a couple of turns of peace. I get almost a decade, until a faction north of me in spain asks to be my client state. This was very odd, and the first time this has ever happened.
So I accepted, they had 3 holdings and it would consolidate my power in spain. Whilst I looked at there provinces, I saw in the north two huge Arverni stacks barreling toward their closest city. There largest army Fortified in this choke point through the mountains. This couldnt be a coincidence. Next turn though, my new client state asks me to go to war with the Arverni. I was shocked to see such an intellectual train of thought for the AI. I agreed. And sent few of my armies to secure Spain. After this they also reached out to Carhago Nova for help, and they agreed as well. We are the two superpowers west of western italy, with the etruscan league following suit and invading gaul.
This Campaign has invigorated me to give Rome 2 Campaign another shot. The AI seems to be at there best on the toughest difficulty. And ive tried almost all the factions (exception for pontus and epirus) On every difficulty except easy. And let me tell you, dont right off the AI and funness of the campaign completely until you've tried this game on Legendary.
For now, a Spanish faction has declared war on me for trespassing through their land. The same end turn the Etruscan League has declared war on me for past trespassings.
Seems the AI really HATE it when you walk through there homes un-invited. Also with Carthage and the Dynasty I chose, other factions have an aversion to not like me.
Anyways I'm about to hop on and see how today goes, but I can finally say. I'm FINALLY satisfied to an extent on the AI for the game. Could it be better? Sure. Are there still alot of fixes needed? You bet.
But if you want a challenging experience with a THINKING AI, Legendary is what you NEED to play.
Happy Conquesting!
