Icon3 AI streak of actual intelligence?

The Celtic Confederation offered to be my client state in early game. Later in the game when I was fighting Gauls, Iberians, Africans and Greeks the celts betrayed me and struck at my undefended homelands. (They were positioned in modern day Austria.) It was odd to see the AI actually doing something resembling intelligent thinking, striking at me when I was most vulnerable. Have you guys seen some signs of light in the AI's head too?

People complain that the AI is bad because they are used to Shogun 2 AI that would go Banzai on the player even if they were going to be annihilated by other factions.

In Rome 2, the AI is actually decent as it is cautious and doesn't attack the player because he is strong. But under certain circumstances (Civil War for the player, several defeats, revolts,...) they will attack you and backstab you if they were your satrapy/client state.

The problem is that the AI being too cautious, it's a pretty much easy and boring game for the player.

In my Suebi campaign, when my first army got defeated and second army got trap to defend my newly occupied region, all my neighbours declare war on me I think AI this time is quite smart.

As of 2.0, I've noticed AI allies are very good at snatching cities you're about to attack out from under you.

Keep in mind that a lot of people report patch 2 to have improved CAI tremendously. As for BAI, I have not seen significant progress.

Patch 2 is a welcoming step to the right direction. Still lots of work to be done for AI.

The AI is still acting like a bonehead in my current Athens campaign. (patched and all)

With glorious piece of genius like leaving almost all their forces defending a city to attack some army far away when my own army is just right there next to the city, ready to attack next turn. (already at war of course)

That isn't better AI. Just another example of AI not caring about any allegiances. CA simply made a point system for measuring strength. Who cares what your relationship is. If you're weak they'll attack. If your mediocre they won't trade or give pacts/alliances. If your strong they'll either constantly ask you to stop attacking them without offering anything or they'll wait till you lay siege to their last settlement then they'll ask for peace but usually refuse to give you anything. Not much different from older games. AI is just more passive when you are strong.

that is a better AI, and I bet it has expansionist and treacherous traits on it.

I actually don't make client states for the simple reason that they will drag me into a war that I don't want to fight. but I have some trade agreements broken and some other instances of when I didn't have an army nearby, and they took me with large numbers and the quality of it has improved since the patch 2
