Btw if its a historical mod England is usually the easiest. Also cav tactics are very important, you can use them to run down archers and then flank the enemy line.

England is good because once you defeat Scotland (not a very hard faction to fight, especially since England's specialist archers are a direct counter to Scotland's pikemen. You also get superior cavalry), the British isles become a fortress to invade Europe from. The Spanish and Portuguese do enjoy launching naval invasions against Caernarvon though....

Venice is also a cool faction because your capital city (can't think what that could be.... ) starts with stone walls and can only be attacked from one direction. Italian spear militia are also a very steadfast unit, despite their name. I would recommend staying away from factions like Russia and the Turks though, at least until you get a grasp of the controls and have some experience under your belt. The Mongols are not known to be forgiving.......

    I'm inclined to recommend Spain.

    1. The other starting factions get missile cavalry very late in the game (France, HRE, Venice) or not at all (England). Spain gets you early jinetes, which allow you to learn potent skirmishing tactics early on, while giving you access to pretty much the rest of what other factions give you as well, if not as well.

    2. You can go to war against the Moors early on without incurring any papal problems, giving you a good route of expansion. You win a short campaign by beating the Moors and Portuguese, so you can win a short campaign and unlock all factions, so the only other Catholic faction you have to fight is Portugal. Winning the short campaign isn't as hard as with starters with two Catholic enemies (England and the HRE).

    3. Once you secure Iberia, you have a fairly good, cohesive, secure location without a vast extent of land borders like the France, the HRE, or Venice.

    4. Spain is fairly strong throughout the game: early game jinetes, almughavars (although almughavars are probably a bit overpriced). Sound mid-game swordsmen militias, chivalric knights, pavise crossbowmen. Good late-game Tercio pikemen, musketeers, artillery, the best late-game navy.

Just don't make the mistake of thinking Valencia is some crappy rebel city that you can take easily. El Cid will eat you if you're not ready for him! Maybe even leave Valencia alone for a while and focus on Moors and such, then starve him out later.

I am doing my first Medieval II campaign as Venice. Venice has pretty good infantry and economy. As long you keep an eye on Milan, you should be alright. Giving the Pope a few individual gifts of 100 florins and an alliance is usually enough to surpass most of the A.I. Catholics, Milan included. Once Milan goes to war, they should be excommunicated in a few turns.

I personally commend Milan or Sicilly (sorry, not a fan of Venice), as maintaining a good relationship with the Pope is key to making your life easier as a catholic nation, and those two nations are nice and close so you can get an early alliance with the Papal States quickly. Besides, I like their unique units, and I have to recommend the Italian nations' militia units. Plus there are plenty of fertile lands nearby to conquer.

I'm a fan of mods but still recommend starting with Vanilla - it has plenty to offer.

When I started playing I found towns to be a bit overwhelming. A tip I read awhile back they helped experience quite a bit was something like. Every town doesnt need to have the buildings for elite warriors seems simple but try to specialize towns castles and such. Work on military units on your fronts so you can get units up there quick. I started specializing more so one would be range and melee calv ect and get the buildings that can boost those aspects up for that area. Oh and roads a really important for a successful empire.

When I first started playing I was constantly using money cheats because I could not keep my empire a float money and public order wise. I spent a lot of time messing up my nation before I spent a bit of time reading up what buildings and the various stats actually accomplished was a big help.
