Default [Proposal] - Sword and Spear on same unit.

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody has explored giving sword and spear and shield on the same unit.

In Shogun 2, it was possible to edit animation tables such that a spear unit will also use a sword when fighting other units. This allowed for some nice unit variation and realism.

In Rome 2, it seems as though the animation txt files follow the same format, and that the same unit can be assigned different weapon models.

However, there is no stat specification in land_units that allow for bonus vs. cavalry.

    Any ideas?

Am thinking of recreating the Massalian Medium Hoplites (spear + celtic longsword) and Iphrikatous Hoplite unit (light armor, spear, kopis) as a mod pack.

Good luck getting an answer to this. I've already asked this of CA members and prolific modders here...and I have been conveniently ignored. Such is life when you are not in the "IN"crowd at CA/TWC. Sorry. However, if you go ahead and change the animations...you'll see that this would work out just fine in game-play.

Thanks for replying though, I'll give it a try!

What do you mean exactly? Like just different models of spears and sword as the primary weapon? Because I do that with an axe and kopis in one of my marine units

Bonus v cavalry is now derived from the melee_weapon for melee combat, that is then linked in the land_units table. There is no way to specify a secondary melee weapon though for stats.

You'd then of course need to tinker with the animation txt files and also the VariantMeshDefinitions for the relevant units you wanted to change.

If someone talking about Several Weapons in a Unit, it can mean:

    1. Ranged - Melee Combination- e.g. Bow and Sword. The unit uses bow for ranged attack, sword for melee fight.
    2. Melee - Melee Combination for all men - All men uses e.g. Spear and Dagger. Normally, a unit will only fight with Spear, and the Dagger as sidearm will not be used in fighting animation, merely as accessory. Here, you want for the unit to use both melee weapons alternatingly.
    3. Weapon Diversity, where The units uses differing weapons, e.g. Axe, Club, and Chopping Sword in a unit sharing a single set of animation. Prometheus did this: His Arcani have Gladius-Scutum or Double Gladius wield. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...?621019-Arcani

IGdood, I guess what do you mean is something like in one of Sekigahara Campaign Modmod, Where Yari-armed cavalry are made to sometimes uses their katana in melee after charging, not only using their spears...Is it? http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...ing-Animations
Well, Jack Lusted have spoken, so you can do something like this.

It bugs my brain that Hoplites and Thureos don't also have a sword...things that were actually carried, historically...so it is my plan to implement them, purely for my sake as I no longer wish to release any mods here or anywhere. The weapons can have the same melee statistic, fine...most of these guys were fairly balanced in their usage. Just the way they are now make me think of the Unsullied from "Game of Thrones"...and as far as I know the only European troops armed this way were helot or levy troops and Nubian, Libyan and Numidian spears...everyone else, in a more professional capacity, would have had a secondary weapon. Perhaps champions and gladiators are the exception.

I still have not been able to find where in the variantmeshdefinitions the swords may be added for myself...albeit delineated here at the TWC. Perhaps we need an exacting tutorial of requirements, processes and screenshots...that way...anyone may do what they need to do to be satisfied. I was rather fond of the way it worked in Shogun...it was...easy to manipulate. Until then I plod along...modding...modding...modding...

    I got it to work.

    Thanks everyone for their help!

Have to make a new animation entry in animations.txt

I wasn't sure if putting together spear_shield_combat_matched and sword_shield_combat_matched fragments in the entry would work, so I made a new fragment called spear_sword_combat_matched and combined the entries inside the other 2 fragments together and then reimported everything back in.

Then I had to create a new variantmeshdefinition file for the unit and assign the variant a shield, sword, and spear and imported it into the mod file.

    Then everything worked.

Yeah....tried that...didn't work for me. Do you mind showing us how it looks in your animations file?

Same here. It works for me only with animation without shield, but is not good however. What we should have to searching for, is a sort of "pike animation" where you can chose yourself the weapon with a dedicated ability, even if it could be only an estetic feature becasue of different bonus attack for spear and sword units.
The best solution, actually, is to have different (clone) units with sword.

They use only sword: db "land_unit" with "mananimation" slot on "rome_man_spear_sword_shield" instead of "rome_man_spear_shield" or "rome_man_sword_shield".
