Default IGdood's Rome 2 Unit Packs - Startpos Updated for Patch 16.1, Peloponnesian Time Travel Mercenaries Pack Released!

    Hello all,

After playing EB and seeing many mercenary units cut out of the game, I have decided that my current project is to make mercenary versions of many current units.

Before using any mods, please download ModManager. I tried making movie .packs but they didn't activate on their own in the ModManager, so all of the pack files in this thread will be mod .packs from now on.

If you do not wish to make a TWC account, please use this mediafire link to download Mod Manager.

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/yy...Manager_V3.zip

How to use mods: Download via mediafire link, then place in the Data folder of the game. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\data)

PACK 1 - Italic Units for Rome

This is actually not a mercenary pack, but more of an additional unit pack for Rome. It was a practice for me to get used to the slightly new format of Rome 2's modding.

What it does: Unlocks Levy Slingers, Italian Noble Cavalry, and Italian Noble Infantry for Rome. Recruit via the Auxiliary Military chain and Legionaire building chain.

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/rc...unit_pack.pack

WARNING: Some technical skill needed to use these mods IF you are adding them to an existing game save.

WARNING 2: My startpos.esf is set to 1tpy. If you use a mod that changes tpy then the mercenaries will not show up. The best solution is to modify my startpos.esf regarding tpy if you want both mercenaries and a modified tpy.

CREDITS TO VIALABO FOR PROVIDING FOR STARTPOS.ESF AND TEACHING ME HOW TO ENABLE UNITS IN AN EXISTING CAMPAIGN

2 Ways on Using the Mods.

    1. Start new campaign:

Merely download this startpos.esf and place in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\data\campaigns\main_rome

    https://www.mediafire.com/?315i7lo9igj5ylq

Even if you don't download all the mods, startpos.esf will work with any combination of them, I believe.

    2. Existing campaign

HOWEVER, you can enable them for an existing campaign. Credits to vialabo.

At the moment, besides downloading the mod to the data folder of the game, an additional step is needed to enable the units in an existing campaign.

You will need a program called EditSF1.0.7

    http://www.mediafire.com/?2z6ug83bg5o2pyq

Download and unzip. Use the software to open the save game of your choice. Be sure to back up the save game in case you make a mistake.

You can find Rome 2 save games here. Be sure to enable hidden folders.

    C:\Users\Chanmeister\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Rome2\save_games

Open up Compressed_Data and go through the pathway as shown below.

    Compressed_Data\Campaign_ENV\Campaign_Model\WORLD\Province_Manager\Province_Array_X\Province_Mercenary_Pool\Mercenary_Pool\Mercenary_Pool_Unit_Array

X is the number of the Province that contains a specific set of mercs.

PACK 2 - Celtic Mercenary Pack

To be historically accurate, the Celtic Mercenaries are located in Province numbers 9, 27, 29, 32, 37, 42, 48

So say you want to add the units from the pack into Province 27 (Raetia et Noricum)

What you will do is go down to an individual Mercenary_Pool_Unit_Array and right click + duplicate it.

The 5 mercs from the unit pack are:

    IG_Mer_Cel_Bowmen
    IG_Mer_Cel_Slingers
    IG_Mer_Cel_Naked_Warriors
    IG_Mer_Cel_Noble_Horse
    IG_Mer_Cel_Oathsworn

Type these entries into the name Value, replacing the duplicated Value.

    Example of picture:

    ADDENDUM FOR PATCH 8 STARTPOS

With patch 8 CA added new entry types to startpos.

Highlighted in picture. This number must not be shared between MERCENARY_UNIT_POOL_UNIT_ARRAY or else you cannot recruit the unit (hire button does nothing)

Thanks to ToonTotalWar and TWC Member Pyke for pointing this out to me.

At least, you get to pick and choose what mercenaries you can get!

PACK 3 - IBERIAN MERC PACK

Please see the instructions under Pack 2 to learn how to use the unit pack.

To be historically accurate, the mercenaries are located in province numbers 12, 47 , and 56.

The units for this pack are:

    IG_Mer_Ibe_Noble_Fighters

The Mercenary Sloxonez have higher stats than the Club Levy. They're not levy, they're hardened warriors who stick with clubs. After all, the Romans used them to successfully take down cataphracts!

    The 6 units are:

PACK 7 - Italic + Greek + Hybrid Cultures Pack

This mod introduces additional Greek units as well as many Hellenized units, all inspired by EB's unit roster. Now with the new update in assets from HatG there are some Italic units.

Mercenary Rhaetic Axemen - The Mercenary Celtic Axeman unit was more or less inspired by Teceitos from EB, but here I'm putting Tekastos back in. The only difference between the 2 is that the Rhaetic Axemen wear linen armor and therefore have a higher armor stat than the leather armor.

Mercenary Helvetic Spears - One of the more unique units in that they use spears against cavalry but against infantry they will use both spear and sword. In game terms, they receive a +15 melee attack against infantry and the standard 20 melee attack against cavalry units in addition to their regular melee attack stat. They were inspired by the Mori Gaesum elite mercenary unit from EB.

Mercenary Kelto-Hellenic Infantry - Another EB inspiration. Same stats as regular Celtic Spear Warriors but given better armor. It was EXTREMELY tricky to get barbarian models to be compatible with hellenic armor, as the only barbarian model files come with head and hands, but no arms and legs. Greek linothorax requires the base model to have arms, heads, hands, and legs. To solve this, I made the units use Greek base models, but put on barbarian hair and beards. Instead of putting the "skin" variant file under hair, I put it in the beards section. That way nothing will be mutually exclusive.

Mercenary Alpine Phalanx - Another EB inspiration. These are extremely ferocious spearmen who also wield ap axes. I had to give them a naturally low attack to compensate. They will chew through cavalry alive thaks to armor-piercing qualities.

Mercenary Massalian Hoplites - Restoring cut content. These hoplites sometimes wear mail and have better armor as a result. They also use Celtic longswords, and therefore are much better at killing enemy infantry than your standard hoplite.

Mercenary Spartan Heroes - I'm going to take flak for this one, but this is for the Spartan lovers. To balance, they're extremely expensive to hire and maintain.

Mercenary Iphrikatous Hoplites - These hoplites were the result of a need for a more mobile force that was able to combat the Macedonian pikemen as well as keep on par with the mobile peltasts. They are much faster than your standard hoplite, less solid, but still able to combat both infantry and cavalry with deadly efficiency. They pull out xiphos and kopis when engaged with enemy infantry.

Mercenary Pikemen - These guys gave me a headache in RS II and EB. As a result, I think Rome 2 should have them too.

Mercenary Cimmerian Heavy Archers - Cut content. Inspired by the Bosphoran Heavy Archers from EB. Wears armor, uses a steppe bow and wields a scythian sword, making them even deadlier shots than Cretan archers and they can also flank if needed. However, they move slower.

Mercenary Thessalian Cavalry - Shock cav for gold.

Mercenary Lucanian Infantry - Peltasts with spears, inspired by the Aichmetai Leukanoi unit from EB.

Mercenary Maniple Troops - Hastati, Principes, and Triarii. The Romans weren't the only ones to use this system of warfare. They use the Italian Swordsmen, Samnite Warriors, and Etruscan Hoplite models along with other parts to show the diverse peoples of the Italic Paeninsula.

Campanian Skirmish Cavalry - Like the Numidian Nobles, these heavily armored cavalrymen can throw javelins and fight hard in melee. (they're different from CA's version in that they do not use the javelin_precursor projectile)

Epilektoi Hoplite - Elite hoplites even better in combat than the Veteran Hoplite Mercenaries

PACK 9 - ARAB AND EASTERN MERCENARIES PACK

This pack adds in numerous mercenaries for the Eastern and Arabian regions, most if not all are based on EB.

Arabian Light Infantry - Skirmishers that can also double as a poor man's spearman. CA's Arabian Spearmen seem to be based off the East Coast Levies unit. My version can skirmish as well as fight.

Arabian Slingers - Slingers from the Arabian peninsula. Not that different from all the other slinger units. However, Eastern and Arabian slingers have Precision Shot instead of Rapid Reload.

Red Sea Axemen - Pirates of the Red Sea with poor morale, no armor, a shield, and an axe. Cheap way of cracking armored units as long as the job isn't overly stressful.

Indo-Iranian Heavy Cavalry - Based on the Bactrian Noble Horse, but with slightly lower stats. You can find them in Bactria.

Galatian Kouros - These Galatian elites can be found in Galatia. They use spears against cavalry and switch to the longsword when facing infantry.

Persian Pârsig - These Persian spearmen are a combination of the Persian Archer-Spearman and the Heavy Persian Archer. Because they're not elite, their shooting is not as fast as the unarmored Persian Elite Archer, but they wear armor and carry a spear. They also don't run as quickly, because...they wear armor.

Babylonian Infantry - These native heavy infantrymen of the East can be found in Mesopotamia. They use a spear and axe in combat.

Eastern Slingers - Same as the non-mercenary version.

Karian Warband - Took the Karian Axemen, took away most of their axes, and gave them swords. They can be found in Cilicia.

Red Sea Hoplites - These hoplites have adapted to the warm sun of the Red Sea coastal areas. While at most wearing padded armor and maybe the occasional quilted linothorax, they're very fast and can be used to catch pesky ranged units.

Caucasian Archers - Eastern archers, but only available in areas like Armenia, Cappadocia, etc.

Arachosian Horse Skirmishers - Better versions of the Eastern Horse Skirmishers, uses axes in combat.

Mardian Archers - Foot archers well used to the warm climate but carry composite bows, a step above the Eastern recurve bows. Some of them also use steppe swords and supposedly they're the elite of the elite Persian archers. Can be found in Media Magna, Charosmia...etc.

PACK 10 - BALKANS + STEPPE MERCENARIES PACK

This pack adds in numerous Steppe cavalry mercs as well as a few Steppe Infantry mercs and Baltic Infantry mercs, most if not all are based on EB.

Mercenary Steppe Archers - These foot archers are resistant to the cold and use a composite bow. However, they have low melee capability and low morale.

Mercenary Steppe Spearmen - These settled nomads can ward off light melee cavalry and other light infantry but fare poorly against everything else.

Mercenary Scythian Axemen - These settled nomads can deal a surprising amount of damage with their axes, but they have low stats.

Mercenary Aorsi Horse Archers - These horse archers take a shield and spear in addition to the composite bow.

Mercenary Aorsi Nobles - Armored version of the above.

Mercenary Roxolani Lancers - The Sarmatian Armored Lancers have "leather" armor despite depicted as wearing scale in-game, not sure what CA was thinking. This unit wears scale and is assigned scale armor.

Mercenary Dahae Riders - Steppe Skirmishers but they wield axes instead of just daggers.

Mercenary Dahae Nobles - Armored version of the above, except they also use the 2-handed lance when charging. When in sustained combat they use axes.

Mercenary Scythian Nobles - Armored spear and shield unit, mercenary version of the Scythian Royals

Mercenary Alan Nobles - A fast, lightly-armored lancer unit that also uses composite bows.

Mercenary Dacian Phalanx - A Dacian unit that has been somewhat Hellenized. Uses both spear and sword, and is faster than a standard hoplite.

Mercenary Baltic Frontiersmen - Longbowmen with spears.

Mercenary Baltic Axemen - Axemen accustomed to cold weather and better than the Steppe version.

Mercenary Oskywie Swordsmen - Basic sword unit accustomed to the cold.

Mercenary Thracian Warriors - They were in Rome 1 and EB. It makes sense they were available as mercenaries in additional to the Thracian Peltasts as well as Thracian Cavalry.

Mercenary Dacian Falxmen - Again, they were available as mercenaries in EB. There's something about a falx that's a lot more brutal than the rhomphaia.

Mercenary Dacian Ranged Units - Unlike most ranged units, these fellows wear leather armor.

Mercenary Illyrians - Light, fast troops that hit hard but more or less have some difficulties holding a line. Even their hoplites aren't as great as the generic one.

Mercenary Gallo-Thraikes/Tylisian Warriors - Sword units for a commander who needs them.

PACK 11 - Allied Generals Mercenary Pack

This pack adds in "allied generals" from almost all cultural groups to the campaign map. They are not named characters, but they lead extremely powerful combat units (reduced in size as they are not royalty) for an extremely high price.

The mod was inspired by the client ruler and allied general system of Europa Barbarorum. I didn't want to create named characters on the fly due to Rome 2's army system, but I did like the idea of having foreign generals act as assistants, seconds-in-command, etc. Every unit from this pack has 2 general abilities (Rally, Inspire, Push, Battle Rhythm, etc) based on the category I have assigned them (Zeal, Authority, Cunning). The categories aren't clear cut, as some of them are a Zeal/Auth or Zeal/Cunning pair.

The sad thing I discovered is that these general abilities are dependent on the leading general's stats on the campaign map, so if you use a Cunning leading general but your foreign general is Zeal or Authority specialist, he cannot activate his abilities. I suppose you can roleplay this and pretend that the 2nd in command is unable to use his abilities due to a disagreement in leadership issues?

Anyways, here's the units that are added.

    CUNNING GROUP

Numidian Nobles - Medium skirmish cavalry.
Iberian Warlord - Heavy cavalry from Iberia.
Eastern Greek General - Heavy infantry swordsmen/spearmen from the lands of arche seleukeia.
Indo-Greek General - Heavy infantry swordsmen/spearmen from the lands of Bactria.

    ZEAL GROUP

African Noble - War elephants from Africa.
Celtic Champion - A reduced size Oathsworn group from Gaul.
German Mercenary General - Swordmasters who also use spears.
    Thracian King - Thracian nobles.

    AUTHORITY GROUP

Italian Imperator - Italian Noble Cavalry from...well..Italy
Epeirote Strategos - Pikemen from Illyria.
Parthian General - Noble Cataphracts from further East
Hellenistic Strategos - Heavy shock cavalry from Makedonia.

    ZEAL/AUTHORITY GROUP

British Chief - Charioteers from Britain.
Spartan Strategos - Muh 300. Just kidding, just remnants of Spartan soldiers from...Hellas.
Dacian - A Dacian warlord in command of shock cavalry.

    AUTHORITY/CUNNING GROUP

Athenian Strategos - Updated hoplites, nothing special.
Saka - Armored cataphracts who aren't as hellbent on offense as their Sarmatian neighbors are.
Eastern General - Caucasian/Eastern soldiers from Cappodacia.

    ZEAL/CUNNING GROUP

Sarmatian Princeling - Heavy lancers from the Steppes.
Arabian Commander - Medium spearmen well at home in the warm climate.
Scordisci - Celtics with Thracian and Illyrian influence around Makedonia.

IGdood, your pack doesn't work as a movie type because movie type packs now require including the entire contents of changed files. The game is probably rejecting your file which only has the changed lines. If mod types do not have that requirement this will be very helpful to know for future modding.

Subscribed! Nice mod! Goes without saying, if you can do this for all main factions main city location/province....then this mod will be one of the best currently out there.

    @Jopel

Unfortunately it does, and thank you for pointing that out. It appears that since the units also don't have AoR (much harder to mod than mercenaries), I'm thinking if I should just create mercenary versions of the units or just leave it as is.

    @Livebyte

Aaah, so that's why. Thank you.

    @everyone else

Pictures have been posted along with the Celtic Mercenary Pack, and I have updated OP with information regarding how to use mercenary unit packs as it deals with .esf edit. I apologize for this extremely inconvenient way of adding in a unit pack. Hopefully, a better solution can be found soon.

Check the roman auxilia AOR. They already exist ingame and offer a great range of territories.

I just finished a stratpos using your units for myself. It works from campaign start. Did you want me to upload it for you?

Also, Thanks for the cool mod

Also is there a good reason Aquitania isn't a recommended location for Celtic mercs? Province number 23. It is where the averni start.

I happen to be quite new to the modding community, have previously just used some small varieties, mainly sticking with the bigger overhauls like EB etc. Anyway, seeing as this mod seems highly promising I would love to test it but I can't seem to find the folder in which you find the saved games in TW:R2 within the EditSF. Any chance someone more knowledgeable could help a struggling noob like myself out?
