Using the Hoplite Phalanx ability...?

Could one of the experts here explain me a bit how the phalanx ability works. I enter phalanx mode. They form up. They march. I let them attack the enemy and instantly they let go of the ability. Once in combat i 'rebuff' them using the phalanx ability. Is... this normal?
How am I to best use the ability?

Purely defensive, but to be honest I don't use it anymore, purely because of that they indeed exit phalanx mode when told to attack. (even with CTRL)

It makes them last longer but they kill alot less,so good against high attack units that you want to pin down for a while untill you can get back up. Some cases against swords your hoplites actually have better stats so let them lose. Also against units with really high charge you want to pop them in to phalanx so you get brace,after the charge is finished you can hit attack.

Hopefully it's on the fix list because I'm a Hoplite fan also. Also the Sarissa phalanx could do with some while their at it.
