Default That Open Field Capture Flag.....

I'm wondering if I have realised why a capture flag appears in some open field battles and it perhaps is not the stupidity it seems. It only seems to appear in battles where the Defender has no movement points left and thus it forces him to engage or lose the battle. For you can hide fairly effectively on these battlefields and, if you don't know where the defender is, then you could spend all battle searching and possibly well lose to a set of ambushes. On reflection this may not be so stupid. Worth thinking about.

    Done more for Multiplayer reasons.....

It only appears in when you attack an army in forced march stance or you are in forced march and get attacked, forgetting the poor implementation and the whole it represents a camp/baggage train it also serves as a deterrent to using forced march all the time. I really wish it was implemented better.

That just about sums it up. Another example of MP intruding into SP and hurting the experience.

Look - all those people saying it's supposed to simulate the baggage train: it doesn't matter. It's badly implemented and hurts the fun factor. That's what games are about first and foremost: fun. When 'realism' gets in the way, it has to step aside and in this case it most definitely gets in the way.

Not really. If anything Total War games have always been fun because of the being a general factor. Simulating whatever feature that we didn't need or not, those capture points make battles less realistic, and therefore less fun.

I want to be able to use the terrain to my advantage, and I also don't want my opponent to disappear and give up just because I'm standing on a tiny (and usually tactically useless) plot of flat land.

While I undertstand the idea behind it the entire concept of the Capture Flag Mechanic in Single Player is implemented in a unfavorable way.
The timer should only start if an enemy army is:
< 20% total men of enemy army and > 50% of enemy units destoyed or routed

as for the reasoning behind it I think this says it all

    Absolutely right.

It really doesn`t matter what it`s supposed to mean. CA forgot that whether an army is in forced march or whatever, it would STILL have the ability to make tactical manouevers once entering a battle situation. It would not suddenly be tunnelled into a `must get to this point, or we all die`. In fact, if a General saw it as wise, he would actually IGNORE the baggage train to WIN the battle. flags totally go against thsi freedom.

They simply forgot to design it with realistic examples of warfare or underestimated the intelligence of Total war players and what they look for in this kind of game.

The capture points brake the AI, if nothing else they should have cut them for this reason alone.

Its incredibly easy to win a battle with them either attacking or defending.
The capture point where the defender has no more retreats you can basically annihilate the enemy force by bringing one catapult so they attack it with their whole army then you place one cavalry unit on top and dismount it. Game Over for the AI, 20 units lost, you dont even have to chase them down.
The capture points present in a battle where the AI has reinforcements are even sillier as you can take out 2 fully stacked army if you bring enough fast units to hunt them down, usually the timer runs out just when the supporting army reaches you so you have enough time to kill/capture them all.

This feature literally sucks all the enjoyment, strategy and meaning out of a battle, if they have to keep them, make it so that the 60 minute timer decides the outcome and whoever controls the flag wins after that runs out. Or idk what but in its current state its terrible.
