... why are the Socii Extraordinarii wearing a Celtic torque?

Celtic torcs have been found among Etruscan items of jewellery from back in the 7th Century, so they were a culture that had been influenced by neighbouring cisalpine tribes for centuries. This is what I am trying to reflect with my portrayal of these n/Italian style socii, that it was a mixture of different cultures, hellenic, italic and celtic.

To show that the extraordinarii are an elite unit, I have given them torcs as a sign of their status.

I'm trying to figure out how to have only a number of them have torcs, rather than the whole unit.

edit: I will be making a second version of these units shortly.

The hastati will include more montefortino helmets, and perhaps some will have a type of linothorax.

3rd Century bronze figure Etruscan soldier:

I am aware that they may have been more lightly armed as hastati, but I would like to add some similar pieces to the armour above for variation.

Additionally, I will be making a second version of the extraordinarii, hopefully with varied torcs, and with some hoplon shields, in correspondence with the 3rd Century urns from Perugia:

I may also put back some Samnite influenced armour in the unit, since a lot of samnites would have served the extraordinarii as well. I may be adding the so-called Iberian chalcidian helmet into the mix:

Though it was indeed discovered among a deposit in Iberia, its origins are still academically up for debate. One theory is that these helmets actually belonged to Italian allies with the Roman army, and were left in Spain. Regardless, the helmet type is identical to the helmets used among the peoples of the italian peninsula, so chalcidian helmets would not be out of place at all, and it is a very interesting helmet that I like the look of.

Oh wow, you learn something new everyday right

But in Celtic culture, the torque wasn't just for the elite, it was universally worn by all social classes. Perhaps some of the poorest of the society wouldn't have one, but definitely majority of the warriors. So perhaps more than just the extraordinarii?

It sucks that CA didn't create a Negau helmet would have been good with the Etruscans.

Do you plan on adding your own Etruscan roster, or is this mod going to stay as a simple retexture type thing?

Absolutely stunning work mate! These units are the best I've seen so far with the Rome II engine. Any plans to redo the early Romans too? I think Hastati et al. could do with a reskin aswell!!

One thing I have noticed is that in all your screen the units have a dark red colour for clothing but in game mine have bright yellow tunic and clothing. Are you using the faction recolour mod??

Lavrentis you should get together with the true roman reforms mod. He is doing what you are doing but has the early roman camilian units already done. And he is working on the Auxiliary forces aswell. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...Roster-Updated

Its certainly a posibility. At the moment I am doing re-skins for all the Etruscan units. I've only been modding for like two days, but once I learn more about how to make new units etc. I will definitely have a go! the Veneti will also be re-done, because they aren't portrayed properly in the game. They were a mixture of italic/celtic/illyrian culture, rather than a celtic tribe.

Thanks a lot, that's really positive feedback! I've touched up some of the other Roman units already, including officers. I have also made a more varied version of polybian hastati, principes, triarii and marian legionaries also. I'll post a few pics, see what you think, make requests if you want, and I'll put them out there for downloads

Yes, I have this installed on my version of Rome 2. I hope I haven't done anything wrong by that (I'm new to modding), I certainly don't mean to pass on others' work as my own!

Thanks mate About the auxilia: once I figure out how to make new units, I could make region-secific auxilia e.g. eastern, germanic, gallic, thracian.

Okay, so a quick update on what I am working on today.

    Standard Bearer Re-Skin:

(This standard-bearer is showcased with a unit of legionaries I am doing based on the Adamklissi metopes [please excuse the faces, a preview of the the Adamklissi legionaries will come shortly]).
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I have currently given all standard-bearers a montefortino helmet, as it was in use throughout Rome II's time period, and a coolus looked out of place with Polybian units. I have replaced the auxiliary shield with an Iberian shield closely resembling the parma.

The final preview includes my new triarii, but they will come in a later preview when I have replaced their spears and done the finishing touches.

    Marian legionaries:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Legionaries have been given more plain montefortino helmets. They have all been given plain republican style shields as well (the augustan shields looked out of place in my opinion). Additionally, gallic mail and armour has been added, as it would have certainly been used among the legionaries of the period.

The centurion in the first Marian Legionary image is part of my officers re-skin, which will be properly displayed soon. Marian centurions will have more hellenistic armour to make them stand out (and it would be historically correct - refer to R. D'Amato's work!) on the battlefield. I will also add torcs to some of them.
