you have to add sword_shield animations in 'animations' file to spear_shield list...need to find equipment file as well to add swords so they show in battle...once this is done you are good to go.

I did it, but they just show the kopis as a secondary weapon in their belts, they don't use it

How did you go about it?
for hoplites ... you need to add sword animations to ...
hoplite_spear_shield
and then in variantmeshdefinitons found the second models file
you have to add the sword type to "weapon_2" section
