Icon5 Is this one of things making the vanilla game too easy?

As soon as you conquer a settlement - even one of a different culture - on the next turn (providing any buildings are repaired) you can immediately have a garrison of your own tribe's men.

Since garrisons were usually composed of citizens of the settlement, this seems unrealistic. Where did all those men of your own tribe come from after a single turn?

Personally, I think it should take quite some turns before you can build a garrison of your own men inside a conquered settlement of a different culture.
Otherwise, this is making the game too hard on the AI.

I believe Rome Total Realism had such a staggered garrison mechanism, and it worked very well.

    Thoughts?

settlement garrisons don't seem to make an impact on public order though.

It does seem quite realistic that there would be men willing to serve their new overlords after the old ones are thrown out. Quite common throughout history.

Correct! The OP is wrong. The romans always found one faction supporting them in every damn country. These garrisons were just a local police force or militia for non-military purposes. And this was the responsibility of the cities. Rome or the province governor had nothing to do with these guys. These city militia were hired and payed by the local non-roman city council. The only exception were the cohortes urbana in Rome, Lugdunum and Carthago.

Whats wrong in the game is, that with higher grade city buildings you get legionairs for city militia. Thats nonsense.

Well, in that case, the Suebi should get garrisons of Celtic troops and not Germanic ones...

I think garrisons take more then a year after capture to fully replenish. But I haven't looked at it... though, on their own, garrison troops will not stop a determined attack most likely. Perhaps in a major settlement, due to the walls... but that's still iffy.

You won't get a full garrison until you convert the central building to your culture, just a few basic mob units (which are utterly useless). If the buildings are of your culture, the garrison takes a few turns before it is full strength if you killed it while capturing the town (although, as usual, the replenish rate is far too high)

Well... next turn is a YEAR later. A lot can happen in a year
