    Default A question about animations...

Right, I've got King_Azzole's animations, which are excellent bar one problem. All of the non-phalanx spearmen (except Triarii) hold their spears in a sort of pseudo-phalanx formation - and it looks really rubbish!!! So my question is this:

How do I change normal spearman back to holding their spears upright until they're in a fight? Will this affect the shield wall ability some of them have?

Also, is there any way of getting the shield wall button to display correctly in game?

I ask this in a new thread because I know more people than just King_Azzole will know the answer..

I'm also trying to put proper anims for units in AE, so i can't answer first questions now.

About button, you have to repack your UI/EVERYFACTION/INTERFACE files including BattlePage03.tga from BI.

How do you do that? Something like run the -pf argument or something.

The issue is that they are using the "short pike" trait. I am at work at this moment so I cannot tell you exactly what it is you need to change, but once I get home I will help you out so they are all in the underhand ready position. I personally like the upward facing spears for the rear ranks. As for the overhand Triariis, an animation simply does not exist to allow it. I really wanted that too, but when you add the hoplite animation to Trairii or any other non-hoplon using unit the shield is angled improperly and it looks awful. Someone really needs to make an overhand square shield animation for spearmen, as I doubt any units at the time would use an underhand spear thrust.

History channel specials I have seen showed that the force generated from an overhand spear thrust is double that of an underhand thrust. The only advantage an underhand thrust would give you is that you could aim for someones legs much easier.

Edit: Sorry I misread your Triarii comment. With the fix I will provide when I get home, they will hold the spears upright when not at the ready like they used to.

Just to clean things up a little, here's what I would like help with:
    • Phalanx units left as they are, they're fine
    • Spearman who can shield-wall - SW on: overhand spears, SW off: behave like normal spearman
    • Normal spearman (incl Triarii): To hold their spears upright when at ease, but have them underhand when fighting. Ie, spears; not pikes.

2> Not sure if this can be done if I understand you correctly. You want them to use underhand spears when shieldwall is off? I don't think this can be done, though I am not positive.

3> Simply change this line: "stat_pri_attr short_pike,light_spear" to: "stat_pri_attr spear" for Triarii type spears or: "stat_pri_attr light_spear" for smaller spears (IIRC).

If this solves the issue cool, if not post and I will attempt to fix it for you.

It didn't work - the non-phalanx spearmen still look noobish.
Okay! All I want is for any non-phalanx spearmen to behave like normal spearman (underhand). How do I do this?

Thats odd... I could swear that the combination of small pike and light spear give them the "phalanx look." Give me until tomorrow I don't have the time to fiddle with it this evening as I am about to go partying (friday night baby). In the morning (or afternoon if I wake that late) I will solve this problem that is pestering you.

Don't worry King_Azzole, I've figured it out! Thanks for your help though, it pointed my in the right direction. I've also given all legionaries (incl imatation) the testudo - just because they didn't use it doesn't mean they couldn't have done, rofl

Sweet. What was the problem? I also use testudo on my Legions.
