    Default Bought my parts, failed to build last night.

    OK, so I built my system last night. New mobo, cpu, gpu, power supply and case.
    Turned the computer on, it wouldn’t let me get into anything but windows safe mode.
    I tried to power down, I couldn’t figure out how to because it kept coming up with “new hardware found”. I installed all the drivers, rebooted and tried to do a repair install.

    Now, when I turn on my computer it boots halfway up, so that that the Windows XP window is up, (with the bar underneath tracking progress) and then it just shuts down and reboots over and over again. What do I do?

    Just in case you are not joining me from my previous thread, my equip is as follows:

    I just bought the following

    * Athlon 64X2 dual core processor 4600
    * MSI Mobo(K8N Neo4-FX) Socket 939 800MHz HyperTransport
    * Kamariki 450W power supply
    * Elsa GeForce 7600GT

    To add to my other components

    * 1.5 gig DDR400
    * Maxtor Diamond Max 10 SATA 150 (250 GB HDD)
    * Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 Value Digital Audio 24-bit Sound, Advanced HD

    I am gonna try these two methods I found on the microsoft website. Any opinions?

    First method:
    1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer.
    2. When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key.
    3. Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted.
    4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.
    5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:
    Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
    [Type Y in response to this message.]

    Enter Load Identifier:
    [This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]

    Enter OS Load options:
    [Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER].
    After you perform the preceding steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item on the boot menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.

    After Windows XP has successfully loaded, the Boot.ini can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.
    For additional information about how to edit the Boot.ini file, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    289022 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022/EN-US/) HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP
    Back to the top

    Second Method
    1. Start the computer by using your Windows XP CD-ROM. Press any key to boot from the CD.
    2. After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair using Recovery Console.
    3. When you are in the recovery console, select the installation to log on to (usually number 1), and then press ENTER.
    4. Login to the Administrator account by typing the password for this account, and then press ENTER.
    5. At the recovery console command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    For Uni-Processor systems:
    expand cd-rom:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ drive:\Windows\system32
    For Multi-Processor systems:
    expand cd-rom:\i386\ntkrnlmp.ex_ drive:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

    Cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which windows is installed.
    6. If you receive a prompt to overwrite the file, press Y.
    7. Type exit, and press ENTER at the command prompt.

    Instead of repairing, just reinstall XP. It'll be easier, and when it's done, it'll be completel fixed.

    I go with OTZ, a reinstallation is better than a repair, that is useful only when you have no other chance

    It's because Windows ***** itself, if there's major hardware changes. It's best just to format, prior to adding new hardware.

    Wait, this is a new installation of windows right? It wasn't already on the hard drive before you built was it?
    If it was, you must reinstall windows every time you have a new hardware change, otherwise older drivers, even if deleted will confuse windows and cause countless problems.
    If there are files you really want to keep (Not applications but files) go into safe mode, and put them on a cd or flash drive, or if you have a network, use safe mode with networking to back them up to another computer.
    Then format the hard drive and install windows clean and fresh.
    Then install all the newest drivers and your good to go.

    If it is a new installation of windows, try another reinstall, if the problem persists we get to go through the enjoyable process of troubleshooting....well its's enjoyable to those who love frustration anyway...which I don't.

    There is NO way you can completely fix this without reinstalling Windows. Major changes like new motherboard and GPU can confuse your Windows a lot, if you don't reinstall Windows, your new hardware will never run be as good as they are suppose to be.

    Post at the Short Media-forums. They are very good and helpful techy people, and to quote Prof, "even when they know that you're going to disappear and come back next time you've got a problem".

    You categorize in the http://www.short-media.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8-forums, since it's non-bootable.

    I second that, I have ran into same sorts of problems as the thread starter. I tried repairing and all sorts of stuff. At the end I reinstalled windows /reformatted my hard drive.

    This is why you should always back up anything important on your hard drive, before doing any major overhaul on your PC. I save my stuff compressed onto DVDs and then reformat and reinstall winXP after switching MoBo or CPU .

    A much easier way is to partition your hard drive, I found 12GB for Windows is just right, and put the rest in another partition. This way I never lose anything when I want to reinstall Windows, or Linux.

    I bought a new HDD and installed Windows on to the new HD. Now, for some reason, its not letting reformat my old hard drive. Anyone have any reasons why?
