Icon11 Medieval 2 still looks better. I don't have flickering pixels all over my eyes.

Anti-aliasing. Soft curves and edges instead of a huge throbbing mess of flickering jaggy pixels.
Soft foliage, grass and trees that doesn't flicker like nuts.
Proper natural color balance and sun brightness rather than red muted colors.

Those newcomers of you that haven't played it, give it a try. You'll laugh at how much better the battles, AI, campaign depth and graphics are.
Not to mention it runs at 100fps with the twice the number of units as in Rome 2.

Or how about the very first 3d total war game? Rome 1.

Those shields in the Roma Surrectum II mod bloody look better than the ones from CA in Rome 2.
A simple 2d texture with no normal map or geometry detail what so ever. Looks better.

To be fair, RSII has had a graphical reworking.

Medieval 2 has a higher contrast, more graphic style of art that's still very pleasing.

The old Total Wars look good. In Rome I the landscapes were lackluster so were the vanilla units, but touched up by mods and total conversions, as you can see it can look great too.

I honestly thought the first Rome picture was Rome II but then a second later I noticed the UI.

And look!! [Gasp] The unit cards actually look like real recognizable units!! I mean, I'm all for artsy hieroglyphics, who isnt? But come on!

The interface were superior pre Rome II titles as we can see also. I believe, as many, Rome II layout-interface, lack of art and too much CGI is indeed making the game boring.

this... warscape UI is terribad, it's artistry but get in the way of gameplay.

The "flickering pixel" effect has been a problem since Empire, true. Is it *just* poor anti-aliasing support, though? Or have people found settings/hardware/mod combinations that at least minimize it? I see a lot of Rome 2 screenshots where it's simply not an issue, apparently.

Yep, it started with Empire's crappy engine and has continued ever since. People buy Total War games anyway, so why should CA bother fixing it?

if you want to be nostalgic at least show both games un-modded, since its obvious they've mods in. most obvious is the rome 1 screenshots........LOOOOOL because if we compare with mods, i'm sure a modder here can make rome 2 way better then any previous game. so comparisons should be among vanilla versions and not 1 vanilla game VS older heavy modded game ^^

Rome2 actually looks amazing. The problem is what happens when you zoom out.
I also hate not being able to see anything but black pixels instead of men as soon as I zoom out.

BTW where are your ship battles in that mod?

Close up Rome 2 is great but as soon as you zoom out it starts looking terrible. Med 2 looks just as good when zoomed out.

Thx. They are from my own very average machine, unmodded vanilla just to ensure it's a level playing field.

Zoomed out on my machine you can see that the men on the walls and the men before the walls are all fairly jagged indistinct black shadow shapes.

Which is quite a problem when you consider that you almost never have time to actually zoom in during a Rome 2 battle. The vast majority of the gameplay takes place zoomed out.

Personally, Medieval 2 looks significantly better zoomed out on my rig based on what it can handle without lag than Rome 2 does. Its not even close. Zoomed in its a toss up. (If I say, try to look down a pike Phalanx battle line Rome 2, The closest unit looks quite good, but the pikes disappear after the 2nd unit. Kind of breaks the immersion of seeing my glorious army marching forward)

Baleur what are your PC specs? My suspicion is that your PC is more than capable of playing medieval 2 at ultra but just can't really cope with Rome II's vastly increased resource demands. A lot of people on this forum are upset because they have PC's and Rome II doesn't look good on their ca. 2008 gaming rig. I run Rome II on extreme settings and believe me it is far better looking than Medieval 2. its not even close. I mean really, medieval 2 is like a 2006 release and we are halfway into 2013, there is no way Rome II looks worse than medieval 2 provided your machine can actually crank up the settings.

    Are you serious bruv?

I can play Shogun 2 on completely maxed out graphics with steady 60+fps but I can't play Rome 2 on lowest settings without it dipping constantly into the mid teens? Shogun 2 looks better and cleaner than Rome 2 does.

You think my PC is too bad to play Rome 2 but easily good enough to play other more obviously demanding games at max settings like Crysis 3 with no issues?

There are people with Titan rigs, freaking TITAN RIGS who can't play this freaking game smooth.

Rome 2 is an un-optimized load of trash in its current state. You apologists are driving me insane with your drivle. Do you want me to go get you a straitjacket mate?

    Just.... wow...

MTW2 is still the easiest on the eye of them all. And who can forget moments like this....
