Default My campaign map is chugging to near-unplayable levels

The title should bring everyone up to speed about my issue. Sorry if people've already fixed this issue and I'm late to the party but I just don't have the patience to sift through the whole forum at the moment.

Anyway, my PC was quite the little monster a few years back and everytime I've gotten my hands on a new game I've been worried that it's gonna start showing it's age. But FarCry 3, Skyrim and the previous TW all ran smoother than a greased ferret, as does TW: ROME 2, in battles, but not on the campaign map. I seem to recall there being hints of this in Fall of the Samurai campaign map and Shogun 2's main menu, but it never became an issue, here in Rome 2 however, when I'm on the campaign map, my old faithful PC seems to be running the gauntlet, a gauntlet made up of rusty nails and industrial grade microwave emitters, knee-deep in boiling oil.

Like I said, it's smooth sailing every time there's a battle, which leads me to believe there something wrong with the campaign map. I've started 2 campaigns, one as Athens and one as Suebi, Athens was bad enough but wheen looking at the forests of Germania it was getting painful to watch, add to that the almost ridiculously large number of factions that all have to go about their business and every time i press new round it feels like theres a full 5 minutes before I'm allowed to start playing again. I would've toggled down all the graphical settings but that only seems to affect the battle-map. If there's a solution to this I would love to hear it, I've paid good money for this game after all. If there is no setting or quick-fix for this, is there anything that a modder could do? As a layman it seems to me like the fog-effect is a particularly big memory-hog.

Anyway, any solution would all kinds of banana pancakes awesome.
