Default Guard mode on auto now ? ( just noticed)

After doing some test it look like the guard mode is just on auto , basically if you don't order an unit to attack it will only defend and stand still like the old guard mode , so its not totally out of the game just on auto, my unit don't start running after other unit like some people claim unless I told them to do so

Yeah I noticed this as well.
We the willing, led by the unknowing are doing the impossible for the ungrateful, we have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Yeah, what's bad is, when you want your units to chase the enemy, you have to micro your units just to do that now. Annoying when the enemy is 'chain-routing', on old TW games, I just Ctrl+A then disable guard mode, now its left-click, right-click, left-click, right-click, so on and so forth...

Still love the game thou, even if its kind of a let down in its present state compared to the hype it generated.

Exactly. Streamlining in the completely wrong way. Completely bad game design.

Well in all fairness I always toggle Guardmode on in battle and pretty much forget about it and I'm sure a lot of people did the same thing so they probably figured no point having another button.

    My 2 cents anyways.

PS. CA seriously needs to release their manuals months ahead of time because there so much information we dont' know what we're doing half the time.

If they had released an accurate manual ahead of time we would have seen how unfinished and mediocre the game was, and not made that $60 pre-order.

What I've gather is this: CA have implemented the Formation Lock Group as the new guard mode. Use it, and the custom formation you created will lock in, and the troops will not leave it to pursue enemies. If you don't there is a chance they will.

Guard mode wasn't just a "don't chase the enemy after being engaged" button. It was also to stay in formation, a thing even phalanx units fail to do in this game. If anything, this feature lacks the most IMO

It is no help when getting ranged units to target a unit. Since you are telling them to attack that one, they will often wander off if not watched.

    Senseless Design choice...
    Among others like:
When i decide to let my army go in defensive stance, i can put them behind barricades, but when i try to defend and welcome the charging enemy with many pila it is impossible, because my "disciplined" roman troops only throw their javelins when charging themselves.
    Hello???
Whoever designed this had not thought about this carefully.

    Guard Mode,
Open formation to counter missile fire
and Fire at will are a must for this kind of game in my opinion.

also auto-enable abilities as introduced in Shogun II after FotS release would be much appreciated...

Put back the guard mode button and take back the stupid reload faster button. I'm pretty sure my little spear chucker's are already throwing as fast as they can once the first stone, javelin, or arrow goes past their head.

It's incredibly annoying. If they insisted on not having guard mode, it should have defaulted to off.

I'm fine with General abilities, but normal units should not have abilities. Some would say don't have abilities at all, but I think that would make the game too simple tbh.

Adding magical buffs and debuffs does not make the game more complex, especially considering that victory right now is basically achieved by running all of your heavy infantry units at the enemy/capture point. Complexity can be added by replacing the magical crap with realistic "abilities" like different formations (phalanxes, testudos, squares, braced spear formations, etc), guard mode, loose/tight formation, realistic fatigue that would require line management, tactical positioning...that sort of thing.

Abilities about particular formations or attitude are absolutely welcome and needed. "Magical abilities" as Fastfreddies described is his funny post are simpy silly and pointless imho.

hang on, group formation lock makes units behave like they are in guard mode?
i did not notice that yet, but will try for sure
i DID notice that my disciplined romans finish the main battle before i get a chance to flank the enemy with my velites

so, if i get rid of the magical abilities and get a mod to reduce all attack values to 1/3 it might become an interesting tactical game
do javelins in the back still hurt more than javelins to the face? anyone find this out?

Who is General Failure and why is he reading my disc?
