Default This is the battle that restored my love of Rome

I've been a diehard fan of the Total War series since first playing Medieval 1 way back when. Even recently, prior to Rome II's release, I had a game of Roma Surrectum II going strong.

Overall, I've been less upset than many here about the current state of Rome II, though there are clearly some inexcusable issues plaguing the game. Rome II is a game that will, in the fullness of time, be refined into something great.

Anyway, I thought I was safe, crafting my little imperium with the staunch support of ~70% of the senate behind me and my conquests. The other 30%, apparently, felt this to be threatening to the stability of the nation. The empire, at its furthest extent, consists of Italy, Gaul, and a bit north of the Alps.

    Civil War.

Nine traitor legions are raised in Noreia to face the nine loyalist legions scattered about the provinces. The only engagement that mattered to me was captured in screenshots, seen in the spoiler tag below, with a short accompanying story.

FYI: I play on double unit sizes, with Radious' morale mod [I do likebattles to last >15 seconds] and 4 turns per year.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The traitor legions march on a recaptured Noreia (I took Noreia from the amazing campaign AI without much of a fight because the Senate's legions were playing in a mountain pass):

True romans, not willing to sit idly behind walls, sally forth to meet the Senate. The shiny new lorica segmentata armor compliments the fiery red of their shields as they clash with the mail-clad Senate troops:

The traitors pile on the pressure, bringing up more troops to storm the gate:

The senate brings along barbarians to aid their fight, showing how far the mighty have fallen. The loyalists try to ignore the gallic javelineers lining the walls over their head, throwing whatever they can at anyone wearing blue:

A true fight rages at the main gate:

Several loyalist cohorts fight almost until the last man before falling back through the gate. The commander, surrounded by his mounted guard, parts to let them pass. Almost nobody is uninjured, and everyone is exhausted:

Outside, the traitors make one last push with their cavalry aiding:

But it is all for naught. Roma Invicta!

Seventeen hundred brave soldiers lay dead or wounded outside the gates, with more than double their senatorial counterparts amongst them.

I loved that I was able to upgrade to segmentata armor while the senate remained with the normal versions. It gave such an appropriate look and feel to an "empire vs. republic" fight.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures... someday I'll learn how to turn the stupid UI off for taking screenshots

Your graphics look amazing compared to mine. Very atmospheric. I can't wait to get a better computer some time down the line so I can play Rome II the way it was meant to be played. On another note, who ever did the historical research and skinning for the units of Rome II did a great job - it isn't 100% accurate - but it's simply leagues ahead of Rome I, and pretty much any other pop culture depiction of the Roman military.

I enjoyed the screenshots. Very interesting to see how the civil war battle played out.

This is no different from any battle in nearly any TW game where two forces just smack into each other. And you got the part where the AI just messes around right. They seem to love abandoning their cities for no real reason. I just would call it amazing, unless you are amazed in a different way.

I thought doubling unit sizes broke ai naval landings. Was this not the case for you?

the "K" key toggles the UI off and on. no more dopey red icons and provides smoother gameplay. I fight all my battles with the UI turned off and use hotkeys for groups and formation changes.

So how'd the Rebellion go? Did you actually become Emperor like CA said we could, or are you still just a bunch of generals?

Im having a great time in my Averni campaign as well and getting a better hang of the battles and special abilities that feel allot more like shogun. I also became attached to one of my generals who early on captured Bibractum, and a little later besieged Burdigala and was the up and coming man. My faction leader apparently became weary about this guys rising position and had him poisoned and injured, so another general took up his slot for decades. When my hero general became 62 years of age though he took over from the factionleader and I recruited him, and before his last breath united Acuitana by capturing Limonum with his army of old.Im more and more loving this game. I do not feel like playing Rome though. First the game needs to be scaled up. Have more armys and oppostion, but I like playing minor factions so far.

Reminded me quite a lot of the epic siege battles in Medieval 2.
