First legion of Italy led by S. Clodius Strabo waits patiently for the Third Legion of Corsica, led by G. Ulpius Lanatius, reinforcing for the North.
Together, the combined forces make up roughly 5000 soldiers. The base garrison in Syracuse is roughly 3000, with another 1000 reinforcing by boat.
As the boats draw closer to the shore, skirmishers are quickly sent forward to shower the landing craft. However, upon landing the reinforcements quickly rush to the town, fearful of the oncoming might of Rome.
One ship of slingers stays behind to cover the retreat of the other landing forces, their precise aim piercing the gaps between shields.
The Velitaes are quickly sent forward, and shower the boat and it's crew with fire.
The Roman forces move towards the city. The ship crumbled under the punishment, taking with it the tortured crew.
As they draw closer, the Syracusan's defenses become visible. Lines of spears block the narrow streets, and the open market area is defended by lines of infantry and skirmishers.
As the Romans move into the town, the first line of skirmishers is pelted by a unit of slingers, protected by a unit of spear infantry. This unit looks on at the Romans, cheering to the whistle of rocks flying over their heads.
The defenders in the market square charge at the Velitaes showering them with javelins. The skirmishers retreat behind their infantry lines, who the Syracusans crash into.
The warriors cheer as reinforcing Hatasti units rush to encircle the defenders.
Meanwhile, cavalry flanks to the right to a ridge overlooking the city.
A defending unit breaks and flees towards the town center.
As the battle at the market rages on, the unit of slingers from before grows overconfident and runs forward, past their defensive lines, to get a better shot at the Velitaes. They are instead met by a unit of experienced Principies, who after dispatching them, push into the city.
Reserve Syracusan units rush towards the marketas the fight continues.
On the far left of the city, a handful of units pushes forward, taking advantage of the little defenses, most of whom were called to aid the market battle.
The battle at the market is slowly being won. Syracuse's final infantry reserves are sent in.
The left flank pushes forward, keen to get into the action.
At the market, the defense is finally crumbling, allowing for the reserves to move in. A desperate final last stand ensues.
The cavalry spots the undefended skirmisher reserves near the shore and form up on the beach, ready to attack.
The battle on the left continues, neither side gaining much ground until a unit of Hatasti pushes through the defense.
The battle at the market is over. The Roman forces move to reinforce the left.
The cavalry charges, butchering everything that survives the impact.
The battle on the left continues. Slingers are easily cut down, but some stalwart infantry remains in the fight.
With reinforcements on the way however, it is only a matter of time before the defenders are all killed, and fleeing Syracusans run down.
While the Romans won decisively, both sides suffered heavy casualties.
I hoped you enjoyed this, and I hope you can all experience this. For me, that one battle was worth the entire £30.
