    Default units textures easy fix

this worked for me and its easy to. please make note i only did tested for units because was what mattered to me, but it should work for the whole thing....on my case i've 1gb vram so on preferences file on your script folder replace the 0 value with

    gfx_video_memory 1024000000; # gfx_video_memory , Override available video memory (bytes) #

then ingame on graphic settings click on unlimited video memory and activate it.

make note that if you have all extreme or ultra or whatever, the game will not change automaticaly. so what i did and it worked was (just example: choose ultra or whatever) and save it.

then return to the graphic settings and change your settings as it fits you and save it again (like overwrite your options, even if they're the same as the previous ones). now you can have your units on high resolution and goodbye low textures, blurry faces and armors..............

important note:this method will use more resources, so i personally would advice to compensate with use something like medium (shadows) by wich is something you wont notice much (unlike other aspects of the game, such as textures).

    i hope this helps!

    improved AA:

    find this line and replace the value gfx_aa 2; # gfx_aa , Set antialiasing, 0-no, 1 = MLAA #

    to
    0=no, 1 = MLAA, 2 = MSAA_2X, 3 = MSAA_4X, 4 = MSAA_8X

on my case i'm using 2 (MSAA 3X) but you can put up to 4 (MSAA 8X).

special thanks to billydilly for bringing it up!

Yes, that's more or less the same, both mention setting the "gfx_video_memory" to whatever VRAM you have. And of course changing the "gfx_aa" to 2 or 3.

Thanks for the post! It's people like you that make me a PC gamer for life.Quick question, my rig isn't epic, around mid-level, and most of my graphic settings are on high to very high. Would this fix help in my situation or is it primarily for you guys with sick setups?

Uhh.. This might be a stupid question, but where exactly can I find this "preferences file"?

/Edit: nevermind, found it. Didn't realize it was in a hidden folder. "C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Rome2\scripts" that's the path with which I found it, the "user" in brackets being whatever you have named it if anyone else is having trouble finding the folder.

    Edit2: corrected "Shogun2" to "Rome2" :p

I tried this with my rig, which is pretty old - AMD X4 635 2.9ghz, 4mb RAM, Radeon HD 5770 1gb. Battles run much smoother, and look as good or better than the settings I had it on previously.

But, every time I go back in the game after adding in the "0=no, 1 = MLAA, 2 = MSAA_2X, 3 = MSAA_4X, 4 = MSAA_8X " and setting it to 2 or 3, the graphics settings have all reset to what looks like the "high" preset. It still runs better than it did when I just did the "high" preset but I can't change anything to "ultra" or "extreme" and have the changes stick. Also, depth of field, SSAO, vignette, options won't stick either. My preferences.script.txt has these all set to "true" and most of the visual details to "5".

Any thoughts? I even made the preferences.script.txt file Read Only and set write on exit to "false" but same result.

I don't think the AA tweak actually works. I have a gtx 770 4gb and tested the AA setting from 0-4, in each case 1-4 simply enables the in-game MLAA rather than true MSAA.

when i change the AA value to 3 and launch the game. my preferences file sets it back to 1

Mine does that too, *if* I play with the graphics options after setting up the preferences file. Launching straight into a battle replay I could see the effects of changing the pref file.

However, I noticed later that not only did this set most of my settings to "high," it also removed some graphical features such as the surf along the coastline and around moving ships. I think much of the gains for me - it did run much more smoothly - were from eliminating these features and downgrading settings to high. I can't replicate the result just by using the in-game graphics settings though - that's still slower - so there's something going on.
