I've been playing Total War: Rome 2 for several hours, and so far it has run perfectly (!) and I've been very pleased. Battles and unit stats need to modified, of course, but I am hopeful CA will fix this in the upcoming patch(es).
However, I'm greatly saddened, and something critical to the TW experience is missing. Something that I didn't really think would be a huge issue, but drags down the overall user experience.
The User Interface/Unit Cards are horrific. It's nearly impossible to tell units apart, and much of what makes the Ancient World great was it's incredible diversity, the colors and distinct weaponry of each faction. From Roman Legionaries to Seleucid Pikemen to Bastarnae Falxmen to Agrianian Javelinmen, (lets not forget those Cretan Archers!), in antiquity men fought in vastly different styles, with different weapons and armor.
We see none of that in the game unit cards. Units look uniformly bland and quite frankly, one of the major incentives to keep expanding in previous TW games was to meet factions with new and unique units and defeat them in battle (or hire exotic mercenaries and stock your army with elephants and Scythian Horse Archers). The current UI frustrates all that, as the differentiation is reduced to nil.
CA - I know this involves the creation of 400+ unit cards, but will you please fix this? My ideal feature would be a new checkbox in graphics or battle settings, where you could select "Ancient Unit Cards" and "TW Unit Cards" that would be a full color rendering of a sample soldier from each unit (like in RTW, MTW2, ETW, and NTW).
All - what do you think? If you support this idea please post here, I know this is a large fix but one that adds immensely to gameplay and immersion. I can't even find my general in most battles!
