    Default Rome 2's Food system

I can't find it clearly explained in-game, unless it's in the Tutorial campaigns but... will an empire surplus of food actually be used to feed a province that doesn't produce enough? I hadn't thought about it, but when I realized you get a bonus for filling out a tier of research, one such bonus is additional food... which wouldn't do too much if it just goes into a surplus, as the amount is rather minimal and wouldn't help too much I'd think.

    Anyone know?

I believe when you have a surplus of food your troops will replenish faster depending on how much food you have.

Yeah I know this much, what I'm curious of is if the surplus of food can be used to feed a province which does not produce enough food. Otherwise you're pretty much certain to wind up with a huge surplus of food most likely. And the bonus seems to cap at +5 growth/+20% replenishment.

    It already is.

So if you got 5 regions you could have 2 that are in the red zone but 3 other regions that are producing a surplus of food and hence you would have an extra amount.

If you ever fall into the red then you start suffering public disorders and even units start to desert.

Food is a faction wide resource. At least that's what my experience of it is. So, yes, I guess it can be used to feed other provinces.

So the food surplus IS used to feed "starving" provinces? It's hard to tell by just looking, since the game only shows how much food a province produces, so logically, it should pull from your surplus... I guess I'll find out. It SHOULD do that though, and from what I can tell, that is basically what I am being told.

I think food is distributed throughout your regions. But it seems like too much food causes Squalor. Or maybe just the squalor is attached to the food buildings.

All your provinces share the food, they produce together. If you have no food, your public order suffers and your armies start to fall victim to attrition.

The game shows the amount of food you have below the minimap in the campaign.

That number represents the production in all provinces put together minus the expenses by buildings, etc.
This is the only number that really matters.

Ah thank you. I was thinking this was the case, but I was worried it wasn't... so I kept having every province be self-sufficient, which really gave me low income, but this huge, massive pointless surplus.

^ This is correct. The number in the bottom right is the sum of all of your region/province food income/usage.
