Default Carthage from trailer nothing like Carthage in-game??

I have heard mention that the version of Carthage that we saw in the preview as a vast sprawling city is not the same as the same city in the same game, in the same battle. Can I get some clarification on this plz? How different is it? I mean the fact that it would be "lesser" at all is pretty bloody horrendous. I mean that says that the Carthage we saw many months ago was built purely for marketing purposes (despite the fact that they said "this is what it will look like, but it isn't even finished!"

I haven't played yet, as my copy is still on its way. Luckily for me, the game is crap atm, so I don't feel so bad about not having it.

Am I misled? Is Carthage just as good as it was in the trailer?

Yes, it looks the same in game. Trick is, you might miss out on some parts of the city if it's not built up all the way. This can happen in custom battle if you set the city map to a low setting. But if you don't mess with the settings too much you get what you see in the trailer.

It looks like that, but not as pretty. I think the weird sepia filter that's on the battle is ugly. Your forces are different. It's not as chaotic, they're just outside waiting for you to give them orders. You also can't land ships at the piers which is strange. There's just a space for two ships to land on a patch of dry land in the dock. I usually don't expect much from CA's historical battle so I was happy that the pre-alpha carthage sort of made it into the game.

It looks like the top image, minus the filter.

The moron who played a custom battle near Carthage and then claimed it was the Historical battle is a ****ing idiot. It's an extremely impressive city.

    In-game pictures I just took:

My advice is not to even bother with this forum for the next month or so.

If I'd have bought Rome 2 based on the advice of people here I wouldn't be playing the game I am so much enjoying right now.

Sweet, it does look pretty nice, but why they had to dumb it down is annoying. I mean from this pic above, compared to my first pic in OP, you can see heaps of differences. Take the left side of the port (pardon the pun) - the buildings are all really simple, squat, ugly things now in-game.

    *COUGH* Prometheus *COUGH*

It is really hilarious how many people jumped on the false advertisement train, yet they are too stupid to browse through the custom battles menu to set the level of development for the city or realize that what they have seen on the campaign map may not be fully developed.

It's very good advice, unfortunately applicable for other places discussing total war too. There are serious issues that need resolving - but that has been the case for every total war release I can recall. And these folks simply kicking and screaming and behaving like chicken little absolutely solves nothing but makes one look like a complete ass.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be expressing our gripes and complaints, but people are engaging in such emotional hyperbole and childish demagoguery that it's ridiculous. And I remember that being the case in prior total wars, so it'll all blow over eventually.

Best to just focus on playing the game or waiting until the necessary fixes come along, and ignoring the tripe going about the forums, as you suggest.

It's kinda funny, actually, the whole practice of gossip and rumor spreading like wildfire is a fairly good example of how a rout could develop - one guy gets scared and thinks they lost the battle, so two guys think they lost the battle, then five, then ten, then fifty.

    OK, cool thanks.
Looking really closely at the pic of carthage from the "5 major cities in game" preview, it does look the same, but at a glance it looks barren. That pic has next to no trees in it, and the surrounding area is as wrong as the hollywood version of TROY was (desert).
From the sounds of things, if we can get mod tools as good as those for Shogun 2 (which is likely), then we'll be able to add trees, change where ships can/can't disembark, and add lighting effects (hopefully!)

Clear difference between the two for me you can see there is some kind of filter or effect missing in the screenshots by Mitch and overall it looks worse.

Is this the highest settings Mitch? Cant say i am impressed at all i mean pay attention to the colors of the walls, and especially the rooftops between the two in Mitch's screens they are ugly and bright orange! And generally everything seems worse including the quality of the buildings too.

It is easier to compare them by viewing both in one post.

Mitch I Completely agree. CA was never going to win over everyone it was impossible for them to. Yet the first game was worse in almost every way it's amazing how people forget how much mods improved games.

Am I the only one who thinks that the pics Mitch posted look better than the pre-alpha screens (no fugly brown filter)?
Aelfwine, then, spoke out and valiantly declared: 'Let us call to mind those declarations we often uttered over mead, when from our seat we heroes in hall would put up pledges about tough fighting; now it can be proved who is brave. I am willing to make my lineage known to all, that I was from a substantial family in Mercia. My grandfather was called Ealhelm, a wise nobleman blessed with worldly wealth. The thanes among that people shall not reproach me for my wanting to get out of this army, to make my way home, now that my lord leader is lying hacked down in battle. To me that is the greatest grief: he was both my kinsman and my lord." Then he moved forward and turned his attention to revenge, so that with his spear he struck a seaman among the army so that he lay dead among the ground, destroyed by his weapon. Then he exhorted his comrades, his friends and companions, that they should advance.

What you need to realise is that your desire for lots of trees and added items in the surrounding areas based on where tree might have historically been is completely disproportionate to 99% of the populations desire to have stable FPS in video games.

...and what's so hard about putting those buildings back from OUTSIDE the city walls. This was one of my favourite things from the alpha vid, as it gave life to the city and didn't make it look like it was just sitting alone in the middle of nowhere. No significant ancient city would have had 100% of the population confined within its city walls.

EDIT: I'm referring not to the houses right next to the walls on the sea-side - that looks great - but to the outlying hills behind the landward walls. ETW had this a bit, with 2D buildings off past the battlemap edge(though surely R2 can have 3D ones like those next to the wall. Though they weren't much to look at, you did at least feel like you were fighting in a populated area and that you weren't just attacking a colleciton of buildings, but a place where people lived.

Didn't notice that there weren't any buildings outside the walls. Haven't played any Carthage maps myself but every other siege I've done the outside of the walls would be littered with buildings and stuff. They actually impeded the progress of one of my siege engines once and created a traffic jam, that was a sad fight for me.

    Cool!

Well as I haven't played yet, I am feeding off TWC for my post-release Rome 2 fulfillment. I'm still stupidly excited, and the fact that I probably won't be able to play until at least tomorrow arvo when the patch comes out means I might avoid many bugs entirely!
