I know most people dont care about GOTY or other awards, but companies do, a lot. So, Im very happy for Paradox.

Europa Universallis IV has several flaws, but it is the best strategy game of 2013. It was very well received by fans and critics.

I thought that we would see a tough battle between Rome 2, EU IV and Civ V Brave New World, but Paradox did a tremendous job improving their main series without over simplifying it. EU IV is fun, deep and surprisingly playable from day 1.

Theres still a lot of room to improvement on Rome 2, but theres also plenty of things that EU IV can achiev trough patches. What was supposed to be one of the hardest years to decide which strategy game is the most complete is now a easy call. Congrats Paradox.

Paradox games are quite niche in their following. You really have to be able to just sit there and do nothing half the time for hours on end. That in my opinion is not fun and isn't what makes a good strategy game.

I vote CoH2 or a very conditional Rome 2, if CA gets its act together and patches out the issues, at the moment Rome 2 is terrible, far worse both in graphics and in gameplay than S2

    Far worse in graphics?

I am playing on extreme graphics, and have had noooooo problems. Game looks amazing. Gameplay wise - it is better than STW2 imo. No total war game is great on release but they have all stood the test of time. RTW2 will be being played and sold for 3,4,5 years to come. Not to mention ongoing patches and support for years.

Get off the hate wagon! poms do like a bit of a whinge though

Im a huge fan of CoH, but somehow I didnt like that much CoH2. But, sure is another contender.

I strongly disagree, maybe if you play on lower difficulties you can have the luxury of doing nothing. Try ironman Austria, theres so many diplomatic decisions to do, so many scenarios to predict...I get that is not action oriented as TW or "gamey" as CiV, but if you really like the micromanaging side of strategy games, hardly theres something better than Paradox titles.

Agree with you OP , Paradox DLC policy is also way more agreeable than CA's . Not to mention that next EU IV patch will include unique national ideas for another 21 countries.

I've played more EUIV than Rome 2 since Rome 2's release, and I'm a Total War veteran...

Europa Universalis is a pretty beloved series for me.

While Rome 2 in its current state probably isn't worthy of Strategy game of the year, I would heavily nominate Wargame: Airland Battle as a tie with EU4 me. http://store.steampowered.com/app/222750/

A game of chess has more action than my last Rome 2 campaign.
Balian of Ibelin: You go with the army?
Hospitaller: My order is with the army.
Balian of Ibelin: You go to certain death.
Hospitaller: All death is certain. I shall tell your father what I've seen you become.
