R2TW is not THAT bad but vanilla RTW was much better.
i have 16gb of ram, and 4gb of Vram and every time i end turn, i get the feeling im waiting for a porn video to finish buffering. its not that long but 5 seconds feels like 5 minutes, except in this case its more like 30s -60s; im 120 years into my campaign its taking 2minutes to load ffs! In RTW end turn load times would be 10 seconds, 120 years into my campaign on europa barbarorum which is 4 turns per year so thats 480 turns(although to be fair there were only like 5 factions left at that point but the loading time never exceeded 10 seconds). this is my biggest problem with this game. if hitting the end turn button is going to feel stressful because of the wait its going to be a very short life for this game.
i really dont want to complain because CA (probably) worked very hard on this and i dont want to stomp on their efforts but seriously man...this is just not it. how can they screw it up this bad? did they not playtest r2tw campaign map? did they not think that 'gee the loading times are terrible i should probably reduce it'. alot of stuff was very well done that is undisputable but when the foundation of the game, the stuff which made the game great is either missing or justed up they cant get a good game.
wait as i was writing this i remembered something else that juston my mood. when i click the 'phalanx formations' button i expect them to stay in that formation no matter what. sometimes if i click attack on an enemy unit the phalanx goes out of formation and runs towards the enemy and gets slaughtered because they werent meant to fight that way _____ BUUUUUUUUUT WAIT! i found that enemy units rout really quickly when surrounded so what i do is just run the AHEM "phalanx" around the enemy and surround them without putting them in phalanx. the enemy routs instantly. now i have 2 units free to flank, flank 2 enemy units and they rout. 4 units free. they flank the enemy but the battle is almost ov....nah its over. walking to the enemy took longer than the actual battle itself?? and why does the ai recruit so much missile units? please oh please. im willing to totally get rid of all missile units in game if it means i wont be fighting stacks of slingers. i have to purposely engage the enemy without using tactics if i want a battle that lasts for more than 3 minutes and this is actually the best way to play the game. you can zoom into the units and see all the fighting. its actually quite fun if you can tolerate playing dumb for a couple battles.
which leads me to another point. military traditions is innovative and its a great plus. choosing how to develop your generals is great as well but the family tree is missing? i dont know how to get my family members to get a wife and have kids. i dont know how many sons and daughters in the royal family i have. i dont know why the other families are trying to assassinate my only 3 family members, one of which is constantly injured because i dont use him and the other families find him easy target for assasination. although i admit, being able to assassinate, adopt, secure promotions etc would have been a great plus to the game IF IT HAD A FAMILY TREE. yeah its hard to stop complaining once you get started rofl. diplomacy is really so much more difficult than what i want. it must be hard to come up with a good AI to take care of diplomacy but accepting trade agreements shouldnt cost me 1000.
i played RTW when all the patches came out and all the great mods were already well developed. i got to play SPQR 7.0, EB1.2 and the latest version of roma surrectum(the version number escapes me atm) so it was well after RTW was released and the game had stabilised. my question is how long does it usually take for the game to stabilise into something you can lose yourself in?
