Playable settings without sacrificing visuals for Geforce 560TI, Intel i5 2500k, 8gb ram
(For us with bad luck in the optimization scene)
After hours of tweaking, I finally got it to a playable state. Mind you it still drops down in 1 v 1 full stack army clashes, but at least it's smooth most of the time.
Shadows and Unit detail are definetly the biggest factors here, as well as using FXAA from your driver control panel instead of the ingame MLAA.

Unlimited video memory is checked to ensure that our graphics settings are actually in effect, otherwise they will dynamically be reduced and we'd never have found the key settings that make a difference. Turning this off only nets you better preformance by turning down your existing graphics settings, so it's better to keep it on and lower settings manually to find a stable combination.
For a few extra frames, disable SSAO and drop Unit Detail to High.
Keep in mind FXAA doesn't get "captured" by the Steam screenshot hotkey (nor by fraps), so you'll see jaggies in screens that use FXAA.
Good to know if you're doing comparison screenshots yourself to find your best settings.
