Default Performance is terrible on almost all machines

I don't see why there isn't a thread on this, there's been tons and tons of posts on the Total War subreddit. But basically, here's the sum of it: Rome 2 (for most people) looks worse and performs worse than Shogun 2, both on the battle map and the campaign map. Here are my specs:

    i5-3570k OC @ 4.4 ghz
    HD 7950
    8 GB of RAM

Despite my specs, the game is laggy as all hell, and my frame rate regularly dips below 30, even when I lower the settings a -ton. I can get the game to a playable level, but I end up with a game that looks far far worse than Shogun 2 - how is this even possible? How can Creative Assembly make a game that looks worse AND performs worse? It's shocking.

I am pretty sure they were very foolish to think that machines would run the game the same as Shogun 2.

Having said that, on extreme settings I only get lag when I have full armies and am fast forwarding, and my PC is a year old.

Why not? Rome 2 is still on the same engine as Shogun 2 and the graphics of Rome 2 are pretty similar to Shogun 2. Rome 2 to Shogun 2 is what Medieval 2 was to Rome (one). Rome 2 should run similar to Shogun 2. Perhaps an average of 10 FPS less than Shogun 2 but not huge slowdowns where some people with high end computers can't even run the game on the lowest settings.

I'm running a Win7 64bit platform using an i5 - 3570 @ 3.4 ghz, an HD 7870, and 16 GB of RAM and my game is smooth as silk at Extreme settings. Are you using the most recent catalyst driver?

Update your graphics drivers cause frankly I am getting great performance on my laptop:

    Core i7-3610QM
    GTX 660M
    8GB Ram

I'm not having any performance issues and I'm using an outdated system.

    Core i7-3840MX @4Ghz
    GTX 680M SLI @1000/2000
    32GB RAM
    4x256SSD Raid0

Cant play this game even on Ultra Setting (without SSAO and AA) without getting SERIOUS FPS drops...
Good going CA, you really must be proud of your hard work.....

Alright, here's proof that the majority of people are having performance issues:http://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/com...ce/There's even a guy with a 7990 on there having issues with the game running smoothly.

Only difference with OP is I have i7 2600k. I'm getting freezes every few seconds on campaign map in which I have to use task manager to close, on benchmark getting horrible FPS (although in battle in campaign I have decent FPS so maybe it's just the forest battle benchmark).

I can run witcher 2 on uber sampling, shogun 2 on highest settings possible (except SSAO of course), Tomb Raider on uber highest, Civ V uber highest and yet this game can't handle mix of ultra/medium settings without freezes/crashes. I must say, I want to know what hardware CA was testing/developing on for Rome 2.

All this talk of trouble with Rome II really has me worried, I just bought my first gaming rig in anticipation for Rome II and now I'm questioning if I got the right parts. It should be arriving sometime early next week. For everyone that has had great gameplay is my rig comparable?CPU: i5 4570 3.20 MHzRam: 8GBMobo: Asus Z87-AGPU: GTX 650 Ti 2GBI fully plan on ignoring my girlfriend right after she gives me this game for my birthday, I really hope I don't have the same problems everyone else seems to be experiencing.

Graphical performance seems to be completely arbitrary at this point, with some on mediocre systems having no stuttering and others on supercomputers having problems galore.

That's easy to explain. Most people with mediocre systems reporting smooth gameplay on ultra or extreme settings are actually playing on much lower settings because Rome 2 downgrades settings automatically. If you enable everything, framerates will go down pretty low if you don't have a GTX780/Titan and a 4 Core Sandy/Ivy/Haswell CPU with at least 4Ghz. Also SLI/CF doesn't work, so all people with those configurations have only about half their normal graphics power, lol.

If people want to check their real performance, they should check 'unlimited video memory' since I think that it essentially disables automatic downgrading.

I'm running a system (about two years old) with the following relevant specifications: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.4 Ghz) processor, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, and a 1 GB Radeon 6870 HD video card. I have the resolution set to 1920x1080 and the graphical settings set to Custom/High. Performance for me is okay, I don't have any special bells and whistles enabled but thus far frame rates have been acceptable and I haven't noticed any real hiccups or stuttering. Of course I haven't tried pitting two 40 unit armies against each other yet, but that just hasn't had time to happen for me yet. Frankly, Shogun 2 ran better for me, but the gap in performance (and eye candy) isn't all -that- horrific, at least not from where I'm sitting.

Thats what we and many other people are saying all over reddit, twc, official forums youtube etc..the game is a russian roulette, for some it will run great no matter how old ther configs are,but for others with good and high end pcs(included)the game runs like crap.

Im having problems running Rome 2 and I could run Shogun 2 smoothly. I have a decent rig, a good cpu and a gtx 680, both overclocked. I do hope they release some patch that optimizes the game or maybe that nvidia releases a driver update improving Rome 2 fps. It is a big problem for me making some battles unplayable. It is interesting to see that reducing the settings and resolution did not scale well in terms of performance gain.

I have a terribly sluggish performance on otherwise good-to-average system. upgraded my graphics card last year.
